Mila vs. Jay, Tim Gunn vs. Emilio, Heidi vs. MK: It's all Celebrity Deathmatch up in here! Thursday night's non-finale episode of this season of Project Runway was full of bon mots, subtle snubs and full-on "oh no, he di'nt" moments.
This is the in-between episode, where Tim Gunn visits all the final designers in their hometown, checks out their work and takes awkward family photos with awkward families. It's also the episode where, when they choose to have a fashion "bake-off" between two designers who weren't quite good enough to make it to Bryant Park as a no-brainer, walk some looks down the runway and get culled.
All such suspense being somewhat undermined by the fact that any true Project Runway fan knows that they already did show their work at Bryant Park, whether as still a competitor or as a decoy. I mean this year? They had SEVEN DECOYS join the three finalists and put on a full show. So, not quite the same level of exposure at stake.

On to the smackdowns:
Jay vs. Mila
Jay is, according to Mila, an annoying fuck.
Mila has no chance to beat Jay, according to Jay, because Jay is so current, so fresh...you know, if he does say so himself.
When they meet again and have to be roommates before the big showdown, there is a scene that may qualify as "most awkward reality TV reconciliation ever." Do you believe it was "cathartic" and "nice" for them to actually talk to each other? Yeah, me neither!
Tim Gunn vs. Emilio
Let's face it: Tim Gunn thinks Emilio is overrated, and Emilio has no respect for Tim. So unlike the heartwarming visits to Seth Aaron and his children -- playing Pictionary ("Fallopian Tube!!") and getting "Papa Gunn on the trampoline!" Or the family-filled meals with Mila and Jay. Or the warm hugs upon seeing each other again in New York. No, unlike all of those, a firm handshake and "Just do it" is all Emilio gets from Papa Gunn.
Oh, Emilio, don't diss the Tim Gunn. We no likee.
Heidi vs. MK
This will have to wait until we talk about the runway show, judged by MagicallyNOTPregnantHeidi, MK and ninagarcia.
As always, click on the links to see the outfits.

Mila:
1. A tweedy overcoat with a big, black, one-sided collar and odd black patch, over a black minidress with one section of black-and-white horizontal stripes and another section of black-and-white houndstooth.
2. A black-and-white horizontal-striped jacket over tight black leggings. Very sixties. Very mod. Very meh.
3. A silvery sequin-y feathery mod dress with black trim. Cute, different for Mila, but not exactly innovative.
Maybe Mila tried a little harder to do something we hadn't seen before. Maybe. But I wouldn't call her clothes way more feminine, flattering or wearable than Jay's. Jay may add volume to the hips. Mila makes women look boxy.
Jay:
1. A very short aubergine dress with a silver zipper down the front, hip-enlarging pockets, and unnecessary black epaulets. And lots of seams. Over black tights or leggings.
2. A gray tweedy tight jacket with tall collar, over red jodhpur-like pants (with odd ammunition loops at, you guessed it, the hips.) And with these interesting snapped black leather shin guards.
3. A Star Trek costume. OK, well, not really, but seriously ... that silver top with black shoulder epaulets? Ridiculous. With black pants and more snappy shin guards.
Overall, it was nothing unexpected, given his designs all season long. Tim's drumbeat of feedback to all designers was "Take it to the next level. Bring something new that the judges haven't seen." So, what was new about what Jay showed versus his work in the earlier episodes? Not much. Very tight clothes, pretty run-of-the-mill (if well-made) pants ... and weird ways to add volume to women's hips.
So Smackdown #3: Heidi vs. MK
Heidi favored Mila. MK favored Jay. ninagarcia was wimpy and undecided.
Based on the criteria of "who do we want to see more from?" Heidi apparently won the day, and Mila is the third designer to compete at Bryant Park. I can see why. Jay would probably do a collection of skintight clothes with shoulder epaulets and weird accoutrements at the hip.
But then again, Mila will do a black-and-white mod line.
And I'm pretty sure she doesn't
