PSYCHIC ZODIAC. What Women Want 2009-style. A Rant on the Current State of Women and Power
If you know anything about the Goddess myth, and I confess I know a thing or two, then you know the Wise One, also known as the Crone, has been silent about all the shenanigans and turmoil swirling about us, circa 2009. Well, no longer. She is speaking out now - agahst at the scope of the mess we find ourselves in - economic, political, cultural. She believes, in large part, this sad state of affairs has occurred because women are still locked out of positions of power. The current debacle and series of crises and scandals, one after another, seem to come at the expense of women. Look at all the crooks, alleged and red-handed,now on parade; symbols of rampant greed and corruption (with even more scandal to come, I predict). There is not a woman among them.(UPDATE: In the interest of disclosure, shortly after this was posted, the Mayor of Baltimore, Sheila Dixon, was indicted for fraud. Innocent until proven guilty of course, but an indictment is a serious allegation. Although I am now slightly off on my premise that no women officials or executives have abused their power (or been charged with fraud), I stand by my belief that women, individually and collectively, can do so much NOW to heal the Country's collective pain).
Some would say that is because the playing field is still uneven. I would say it is because women instinctively work to protect and preserve the valuable and natural. It is also because few women are at the top. Women still earn less money for the same jobs; they are the majority of the poor; their voices are seldom heard, and if heard at all, are muted. Long, long ago, in the early 1970s, I demonstrated for women's rights. I am a veteran of "Alice Doesn't Day" (a little-known women's work protest). I was a political investigative reporter - one of only 2 women out of a cadre of 15 reporters in a major city. I wrote, for a national magazine, about women in non-traditional jobs (at that time, there were just a handful of women police officers, fire personnel and corporate executives) My favorite interview was with a boxer - working her way up the ranks, one punch at a time. She epitomized the fight in all of us - not only to be treated equally, but to have the very right to enter the arena. Today, as far as women's rights and women-power go, we are almost in the same place as we were in the 1970s. Yes, we can point to a few women as role-models and politicians: Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, among them. Butt only Hillary, in my view, has shown the courage of her convictions and the bravery of a woman who knows what she's up against, and still has the fight within her to go the distance. She is an icon for all women who wish to speak; who wish to bring about peace; who wish to fight to make the world a better place. If you are as disgusted and frustrated as I am about the current state of affairs, you can do something about it. You can take a stand, join with other women of like-minds, and raise your voice in protest. The best way to do this is on a blog on the internet Or via a social network.
In the 1970s, we didn't have the internet as a way to communicate. So we marched; we spoke at meetings. We signed petitions. We wrote books. Today women have much greater opportunities to make a much bigger impact. They don't have to wait for an editor to publish their editorials or their books. They are free to write, to report, to film; to be heard, via the internet. If you are hesitant, but want to participate in a wave of women-generated change, you have the tools at your command(your keyboard). If you are still hesitant - you can take a clue from your Sun Sign (your archetype) and consider how best you could contribute. I know if you are passionate about change, you don't need a Sun Sign reading, but if you are shy or uncertain about where you can play a role, Sun Signs offer you archetype templates. Some Sun Signs are best suited to leadership roles: Aries, Capricorn, Leo. Others work best behind the scenes: Pisces, Virgo, Aquarius. Communicating - via blog or art/photography favors Libra, Gemini,Sagittarius. Fundraising and organization suit the talents of Scorpio, Cancer, Taurus. Put together a women's interest group and get going. Whether your interest is parenting and education; the environment and animal rights; freedom of speech and the first amendment - whatever. Make your voice heard.
In ancient days, the Goddess was worshipped because she brought forth and sustained life. Women were honored and even worshipped for their life-giving, nuturing, healing and wise counsel. This time (a dark time) calls for women to assume more leadership and to help create the change that is so necessary for our Common Good. Goddess knows, our time has come.
