For Amaey: Will You Help Find This 8-year-old a Bone Marrow Donor This Weekend?

Purvi Shah, the incredible artist and friend who envisioned BlogHer's logo as everywoman, needs our help. Her amazing eight-year-old son, Amaey, needs to find a bone marrow donor this weekend. Here's the story ...

Six years ago when BlogHer was just a twinkle in my, Elisa's and Jory's eyes, we knew we needed a logo. A look. A personality. So I called my dear friend Purvi Shah, artist extraordinaire.

"We are developing a global stage for everywoman," we said. "Just like our voices, our logo must be both young and old, not blond, please heaven not pink, curvy, pan-ethnic, pan-cultural and ALL WOMAN!"

Purvi smiled, nodded, delivered. The Her-moticon was born, BlogHer's little woman made of punctuation, our distinctive and wonderful mark. We've given her a make-over but the fundamental vision, Purvi's vision, still stands for this amazing community.

For the first time ever, I wish it were 2005 again. Because that year, Purvi's baby boy Amaey, then just three years old, began to receive treatments for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Up and down, down and up his treatment went, turning his baby life into a marathon of stoicism and not, hospitals and not, fear and not, pain and not. Treatment after treatment....

Five years later, Amaey has now been diagnosed with a second, aggressive form of Leukemia -- Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. He needs a bone marrow transplant, most likely from someone in the South Asian-Indian community, but donors of all nationalities are welcome.

Will you help us help Purvi and Amaey and their family? Please help us find a match for this amazing boy, whose mother is such a positive light of inspiration that in these past five years she has channeled her own fear and pain into co-founding an art auction and outlet for children with cancer, Kids and Art

Here's how to help:

Silicon Valley residents: Please go swab your cheek with a Q-tip this weekend at one of these expedited searches for a match for Amaey:

- FRIDAY IN SAN MATEO, May 20, 2011, 11am-2pm: DemandTec, One Franklin Pkwy, San Mateo CA 94403

- SATURDAY IN FREMONT, May 21, 2011, 11am-4pm: Fremont Hindu Temple 1, 3676 Delaware Dr, Fremont, CA 94538

- SUNDAY IN FREMONT AND LIVERMORE May 22, 2011, 11am-4pm: Fremont Hindu Temple 2, 3676 Delaware Drive, Fremont CA 94538 AND 10am-2pm, Shiva Vishnu Temple, 1232 Arrowhead Ave, Livermore CA 94551

Everyone else: - Go to this Facebook page to learn more.

OR - Copy and paste join.marrow.org/AMAZINGAMAEY to your address bar and the National Marrow Donor Program will send you a kit.

Thanks for your time and attention to this post, offered as an open prayer for Amaey, his family and the hope that we can find a donor this weekend.

Please help. Please pass this along. Thank you.

Best,
Lisa

Lisa~

I humbly offer my support to Purvi. Please feel free to share my information. While our kiddos do not have the same diagnosis, Gregory received the precious gift of a new life via a bone marrow transplant, in June of '09.

Different disease, same emotions.

I am here. I am helping to carry the burden. With love, love, love...

I saw this via a tweet yesterday and went on to share it to my friends on Twitter and Facebook. Hoping that the balloons messages of hope we've sent out find their way back to this dear family.

Thank you for once again providing a way for us to use our circles and our words to have an impact.

Thanks for clarifying; you're absolutely right re: blood type.

Marrow matches are made using a tissue, not blood match which is why most patients find their match within their own ethnic group. From time to time though matches are found from a different ethnic group than what the patient is so the more people who join the registry, the better all patients odds are of finding a match.

It's also worth saying that joining the registry is pain free, just four cotton swabs brushed on the inside of your mouth and a short registration form. The whole process takes about 10 minutes.

If you are a match donating can range from being pain free to in most cases causing only mild, temporary discomfort. 80% of donations are now given using a method similar to donating platelets. Most patients watch tv while their donation is given using the PBSC (peripheral blood stem cell) method.

There are illustrations here that show and describe both donation methods: http://marrowdrives.org/bone_marrow_donation_metho...

Exactly Grace. I'm so happy that these companies are hosting donor drives in San Mateo, Fremont and Livermore this weekend, where we are blessed to have such sweeping #desi communities for Amaey. Here's hoping that social media will help carry the donation flag around the world...

Best,
LIsa

Although as someone with A-negative blood, I'm not exactly the universal donor!

Thanks for your comment .

That's fantastic!

And yes, you are absolutely right. Everyone, if you copy and paste join.marrow.org/AMAZINGAMAEY into your address bar and enter, the National Marrow Donor Program will send you a kit. As Stacie says, it's easy and quick. And you could save a life. I joined a couple of years ago when my friend Jill Asher led a drive. Took about five seconds. :)

Amen Rita. The best case study I've read recently is the terrific book The Dragonfly Effect by Jennifer Aaker and Andy Smith, which chronicles a massive, groundbreaking effort in 2007 to save the lives of two heartbreakingly young South Asian men by building the first such donor registries for that community. I can't donate myself because I've also had a blood cancer but I'm spreading the word. I hope BlogHer will do the same sort of search for me if I ever need a donor.

Minorities have the best chances of finding a donor match from a person of the same ethnicity.

The chances of a South Asian patient finding a match are 1 in 20,000. The most important thing we can do to improve those odds is to get more potential donors registered.

So please share this with your friends. Like Staci said, even if you don't live in the Bay Area, you can sign up at a drive near you and be entered in the National Registry.

I am so sorry to hear about Amaey's condition.

I did want to let you know that people can join nationwide to help him. Be The Match is a national registry so results all go into one database.

There is a zip code live donor drive locator at this link on the Be The Match website http://www.marrow.org/JOIN/Join_in_Person/index.ht... that will help people to find a live drive in cities all across the country.

When my cousin in Washington state received a transplant two years ago it came from a young man in Hawaii. They flew his donation to her transplant hospital.

There are additional ideas about how to launch a donor drive effort to help a patient in need on the public service website I created following my cousin's illness at http://MarrowDrives.org.

Also, some international registries partner with Be The Match and almost half of matches made are between donors and patients who live in different countries. So encouraging people to join worldwide will only improve the odds of finding Amaey a match.

I did so much volunteer advocacy back in 2009 I was invited by Be The Match to become a certified, volunteer, SMART (Social Media Active Response Team) member and have continued to work with them to raise awareness about the need for more people to join the registry.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. For now I will work on a post and feature his need in my blog.
