Little known fact about me: I cannot watch myself on television. Or any kind of video whatsoever. Which is killing me today because I really want to watch this clip, if only to see Ree and Michelle. Because my god they are both adorable. (Honestly, I may have to suck it up and watch the entire thing, rather than muting it and cringing the entire way through, which is what I did this morning.)

What I liked the most about these girls was this: they get the idea of community, and they understand how important it is to find a way to give back. That and they're both really really funny.

I can't watch the video (seriously, it's killing me), but you can, and then you can go do some good in your neighborhood. The bottom line is this: anything you do to make the world a better place, no matter how big or small, makes the world -- a better place. Go figure.

The other Putting it All Together contributors are weighing in on giving back, and they've got some smart things to share. Sheila says that "community service becomes less of an 'optional thing', but part of my everyday kid raising philosophy and how my family operates - helping neighbors, giving donations when possible and building a community one potluck at a time." Exactly. Be sure to keep your eyes on Sheila, Holly, and Rhoda as we move on into the next video. And please keep sharing your giving back strategies here.

What did we miss? How are you giving back? Let's hear it. I'll be over here cowering behind my hands because omg video!

Thanks for the great ideas. You're right - you don't have to do something big. Every little thing helps. The links you provided are perfect. Thanks much!

Sometimes, just making someone smile when they are having a difficult day, or find themself in circumstances they didn't choose, is a great gift. I started a nonprofit organization called Drop In & Decorate (dropinanddecorate.org) that teaches people how to decorate and donate cookies to nonprofits in their own community -- food pantries, domestic violence shelters, women's programs, etc. It's something anyone can do at home, with friends or with their kids.

I love the at-ease feeling of these videos...great job to all! Susan, you are lovely and relaxed--I felt as if I was sitting there with you all...and I don't "know" any of you!

I learned the hard way not to bite off too much--with little ones, it can happen so easily. Currently I sit on the board of a non-profit, United Way supported Child Care facility, volunteer at the elementary school and I'm a Kiva Lender. I'm also a frequent random-act-of-kindness kind of gal.

Thank you for the encouraging video ladies!

I'm a SAHM now but I've been able to use my background in teaching to tutor an inter-city teen with reading and writing.

The experience has been a blessing to me and I'm so glad to see him making progress.

I wrote a short series on my blog about our first 3 months of tutoring. The story begins here: http://theadventureofmotherhood.blogspot.com/2010/... ( http://theadventureofmotherhood.blogspot.com/2010/... )

I don't have a lot of extra cash but I'm glad I can give my time to make a difference.

...and Ree and Michelle would agree, I am sure.

I loved the suggestions on your blogs for this initiative. What amazed me was the complete agreement among women who commented that we have no time, very few extra dollars ...and, that aside, share a HUGE desire to do more.

For the record, the prom dress Michelle shows off in this video was a $25 find at my local St. Vincent de Paul center in Redwood City. I found it among a gaggle of girls shopping for prom, some with moms in tow. Then I drove about five miles away to Stanford Mall where I found the same scene, only the girls were questing for The Dress among much spendier pickings. Yet their mothers were making the same general comments about what was (and was NOT appropriate). Hmmmm...self-confidence and coming of age in a prom dress, the great unifier?

Here are my fave ways to give back:

http://www.helpamotherout.org - never thought about this before the video, but I say GO! Less than $20 to help? Bring it.

http://heifer.org - This is empowerment.

http://compassion.org - So is this.

http://redcross.org - Blood, not money.

http://care.org - Changing women's lives all over the world.

At the bottom of the post, you should see the actual video -- or at least a funny screen grab of Ree making me laugh. Hover over that, and an arrow should appear; click the arrow and voila! video!

(That I am not watching because I have issues. Sigh.)

I really, really, super really want to watch this video - but I'm not sure where the link to it is! When I click on the top image, it tells me I can't have access on Flickr (and I'm logged in). Help?
