Putting It All Together: What Do You Wear for a Day In and a Night Out?

Recently, my mantra has become "I have got to get my act together." I've been working long hours and traveling more than usual and juggling my kids and my house, and I'm feeling a little scattered. At least once a day, I look around at the piles -- of laundry, of papers, of stuff we're too lazy to put away -- and I think, "Seriously, I have got to get my act together. But I need help."

I'm sure you know the feeling.

You can imagine how happy I am about this then: BlogHer is producing a series of five videos titled "Putting it All Together." Some of your favorite bloggers will offer tips and tricks for -- well, for putting it all together -- your house, your closet, your life.

Your hosts: Shelia of Xaolin Mama, Holly of Nothing But Bonfires, Rhoda of Southern Hospitality, and the Pioneer Woman herself, Ree Drummond -- and me! We'll also have some extra special guests on hand to help sift through the tips for -- well, for putting it all together. How crazy is that?

Super crazy, I'm telling you. And super awesome.

"Putting it All Together" will look at how to define your own style -- in your closet and your home -- with practical, useful advice on what to wear and how to get organized and whatever else it is you all need help with. And we're starting by answering your most basic What should I wear? questions. Like, what should I wear today? Or tonight? How often do you stand in your closet and think I have nothing to wear? Once a month? Once a week? Every day? Are you stumped by date night or party dressing, or is it casual Friday and the carpool line that leave you stumped? Either way, we're here to help.

But first we need your help.

Style maven Sheila Dowd of Xaolin Mama will be hosting the first video in the series; she'll be joined by the incredibly fun and funny Loralee Choate of Loralee's Looney Tunes. Their video -- titled "A Day In/A Night Out" will offer tips and tricks for what to where when you're hanging out -- and when you're going out.

Sheila and Loralee are both super stylish and extra hip, but they don't have all the answers -- and that's where you come in. What do you wear for date night? Dress? Jeans? How about for a Tuesday? What tricks do you have for getting glammed up for a night on the town -- and is there a way to avoid the dreaded Yoga Pants Rut during the week?

Share your tips and tricks in the comments here, or at Xaolin Mama; we're looking to solve real women's real issues here. Have more questions than answers? Ask! I'm willing to bet that someone else is wondering the same thing. (For the record, pajama pants in the carpool line are a NO. Always.)

But now it's your turn: What do you wear for a regular day? What's your go-to for night?

My infallible dress-it-up strategy is to accessorize; jeans and a tee are a perfectly acceptable uniform for day or night, because they serve as a blank canvas -- add a beautiful necklace or some fancy earrings or a statement bag and suddenly you're ready for anything. Including the carpool line. It doesn't take a lot of bling to go from frumpy to fab -- just one beautiful piece will change your entire look. The necklace pictured here is from Anthropologie; it would be great with a tee or a LBD. I would honestly wear it everywhere, which means I can also wear my usual skinny pants and a crew neck outfit everywhere, too, because no one is looking at my clothes when I'm sporting a necklace like this one.

What about you -- how do you style yourself for a day in? How about a night out? Do you even bother if you're not leaving the house, or are you a yoga pants kind of girl at home? And do you go all out for night, or is it just too much work?

Mine is a classic black pants/jeans, a black top, high heels and pearls to dress it up. You can never go wrong with pearls. And if it gets chilly my favorite blazer and a clutch bag.

Sadly I find myself in sweats when I'm just at home. I dress up enough when I go out. Well, sort of.

That would be so fun! I think I'll write a post just for that specific purpose! Any specific requests or occasions?

Dark wash jeans and a pretty necklace with a simple top can look really good. But, I'm really upset with you showing me that necklace. Anthropologie doesn't need anymore of my money. Jeeze. Haha!

I have no fashion or style sense. I work from home, starting at 4am, so until 1pm I am in my official work jammies, totally separate from my sleeping pjs.
Once I'm off work, my normal daytime attire is jeans (or shorts) & a tshirt or knit shirt.
I do have a black skirt I LOVE that goes with everything for church or nicer occasions. I have a few great dresses I wear as well.
I have tons of jewelry but rarely wear any of it. I just don't take the time to put together an "outfit" for daily wear. For church or occasions, I do accessorize & put on makeup.

I'm another that works out of my house and dressing up means changing from tennis shoes to clogs. I know that accessorizing my jeans/t-shirt look would do wonders but I never know how to begin. I'd love to see a video that gave some guidelines about how to do that.

I work from home but have to get dressed to take my kids to daycare. I have two standard outfits: any simple day dress or a pair of dark jeans and a black top with a little sparkle.

For day, I usually have a cardigan added on to stay comfy and cozy and wear flats in a bright color. For night, I add on jewelry, a wrap, a bright clutch and throw on some killer heals.

I work from home and I love the idea of a plain white t-shirt, dark jeans and some truly badass accessories - day or night.

I always start with a great piece of jewelry -- a killer necklace or bracelet (there are so many options around that this season) and some great shoes/boots/sandals depending on the season.

But, since spring is here (!!!), a great basic black cotton sundress works as well as jeans/white t.  A classic backdrop is key for trendy accessories.

It takes very little to look "put together" if you have great basics.  And investing in some key accessories is much more budget friendly than re-wardrobing seasonally.

I started wearing yoga pants long before I started doing yoga. But, man, I love yoga pants. And yoga. But yoga pants are love.

It's really not fair for me to participate in this conversation because I have no fashion sense whatsoever. It is not helped along by the fact that my very part-time out-of-the-house job only requires jeans and a semi-decent shirt. As such, if I'm not in yoga pants, I'm in jeans. And I don't even know what a night out MEANS.

I love to wear dark wash jeans because you're right - with a change of accessories they really can get you from day to night. So during the day, dark wash jenas with a simple top, and at night I change into a more glamorous/ fun top, add heels and an evening bag, sometimes a necklace, and I'm good to go to anything but the most formal event.

I work from a home office each day but I do not use this as an excuse to lounge around all day in my pajamas. I always get dressed and make myself look presentable, even if I don't plan to leave the house that day. I never, ever go through the carpool line at my daughter's school wearing pajamas!

My "uniform" rotates between cotton summer dresses in the warm months and pants with t-shirt and cardigan in the cooler months. I have discovered some very well-fitting cotton pants ( http://www.nyandcompany.com/nyco/browse/productDet... ) from NY & Company that have a side zipper. These have become my uniform pants this winter.

loud and proud.

Do I HAVE to take them off and put on REAL PANTS to take the kids to school?

As a fitness professional/bellydance instructor, I've started wearing my "work" clothes to other places. It's not uncommon to see me dressed in hip hugging, flare-leg cotton pants with a crop tank or comfy slouchy shirt any time of day. I really love Athleta ( http://www.athleta.com/ ), a line by the Gap Group, that makes feminine workout wear you can wear everywhere!
