Question of the Week: Are your family traditions a little "quirky"?

I got an e-mail from Denise the other day asking me if I would write the lead in for unusual family traditions. I didn't know if I should be flattered or offended. Is it THAT obvious that I have an unusual family?

Maybe she read the post I wrote a while back about how we used to play "Let Me Clear My Throat" by D.J. Kool every night to signify bath time. Possibly she knew that my husband and I always give each other anniversary cards that are entirely inappropriate for the occasion, and often in languages that we don't speak, or maybe somebody told her that every Easter I pull out the little cardboard animals out of the bottom of the PAAS Easter egg dye kits and write phrases from the movie "Deep Cover" on them and then mail them to my brother (back when we lived at home we used to just hide them in each others bedrooms).

I have also been known to wrap Christmas presents in Chanukah wrapping paper. Maybe that stems from having a December birthday and always receiving birthday gifts in Christmas gift-wrap.

Yikes. I may have revealed a little bit too much about myself there.

So how about you? The Holidays are upon us now. Do you have any unusual family traditions? Come on. I know it can't just be me.

Post it on your blog and come back to add your link.

Well, as much as I don't believe in Christmas talk BEFORE December 2nd (must be all of those years working in a church), I posted a short blog about our quirky Christmas traditions. I had to hid the post on my blog though, so as to not look too much like a hypocrite since I just took a stand about Christmas decor.

What’s so unusual about my family's traditions is that they are so USUAL. They are what's to be expected of traditional families: A glowing tree, a Christmas ham, matching pajamas, and a glorious Christmas breakfast. They go off calmly, peacefully, and without a hitch. Well, for the most part. But in general there is peace, harmony, and even love, or at least reverence for the traditions. We have become the Typical American Family. We enjoy each other’s company and we look forward to the holidays and all of the togetherness they bring. How many people in this crazy culture can say that?
