Questions about editing profile?

I saw another thread about profiles but it didn't seem to answer my question, so I apologize if this is a repost. In the public view of my profile, it only shows about 100 characters of the bio I entered on the 'edit profile' tab. Is this normal?

When I was editing my profile on the 'public profile' tab, I entered a paragraph and I can see this when I view my own profile, but if I log out and then view my profile as anyone else would I can only see the fields from the 'edit my profile' tab such as the tags and snapshot, and about 100 characters of the bio I entered on this page. Is there a bug, or am I only allowed 100 characters?

Also, what do the tags do? Can I use them to find other members with similar interests?

And finally, this isn't profile-related but is there a Blogher RSS feed i can put on my blog?

Answering Profile Questions

We have two separate profiles. Both are visible to members but one is harder to find than the other. (We are still working on the profile situation, it isn't perfect and we're aware that two profiles, one of which is hard to find, is not the ideal user experience.)

People can find one profile when they click your name in a comment or on a blog post. They can find another profile when they search for you in the Member Directory.

100 characters? I wasn't aware that there was a character limit but I'll go ask...

The tags are part of another tool that has not launched yet and yes they will help you find others with the same tags, or let others with those tags find you. :-)

BlogHer has many many feeds, click the "subscribe" link underneath the buttons at the top of the page and choose your feed(s).

Character limit answer

I put 500 words into both versions of your profile and they both saved without a problem. If you are still having trouble with your profile send me an email at denise@blogher.org and we'll see if we can figure out what's in your text that might be causing a problem.

Thanks for your help, Denise. I just tried to edit my bio again, and it cut it off. Maybe it's a problem with my browser or OS? I am using Camino and I use a Mac. Anyway it's not a huge problem, I can stick to a short bio and I'll see if I can fix it later with another bio, just wondered if it was normal. Thanks again

Interesting

I haven't heard any reports of Mac users who aren't able to edit the bio properly. Send me the text you want in there and I can add it for you if you like.

Hi Denise,

My tag profile's a little bit on the messy side - I do see that a lot of these profiles have underscores displaying for spaces, I guess that can't be fixed yet?
And there are a couple of text issues, I will try and edit it again later in the day, and if there are additional problems I might send you some text too if that's okay?

The tag profile

The tag profile is just that - tags. These will be used (eventually) in a special tag search that will help members find bloggers who blog about specific subjects or have experience in specific areas.

Yes, the _ are less than attractive, totally agree.

tag profile won't delete

hi there. i can't seem to accurately delete information i've entered into my "tags" section of my profile. mostly, i have tried to delete the information in the "favorite books" section and each time i try to enter new information it just adds to the information that is already there. can you help me sort through this? THANK YOU.

Sorry about that Katrina, sometimes the tag profiles are "sticky". I'm reporting it now and asking for a reset. I'll send you an email when that's been done.

Not everyone has sticky tags, but some do and those have to have their profile reset. We don't really know why but we're working on it.

I'm sending yours off for reset now and will email you when it's cleared.

Adding blog URL to public profile

I also have a profile question. How do I a edit and add to my "public profile" - the one that is shown when I post a blog entry on the site? When I press "Edit Profile" most of those items do not show up.

Also, how do I add my blog address to my signature when I leave comments on other posts? My URL is: http://adifferentnrest.blogspot.com

Some answers...

After you log into BlogHer, click the "my profile" button in the top right corner of the site. Then click "edit my profile" in the top right corner of your profile page.

Click Account Settings and scrolll down to the "signature line box" and add your signature line. Save your changes on that page. (Be aware that your signature only auto-appears in comments and will not appear when you create a new blog entry or a new forum entry.)

Next, click "basic profile" and enter a brief bio of yourself and include a link to your blog(s) - HTML is accepted in the bio field and I would recommend you use it to make your link(s) clickable.) Save your changes here.

Next, click "tag profile" and then click "tags". This expands the tag menu and allows you to fill in all sorts of "about me" type tag boxes. These are tags, so don't write in complete sentences or your tag profile will form oddly. ;-) The brief bio box on this page does not accept HTML but I would still recommend including the name and url of your blog. You can also add the RSS link for one of your blogs and as long as it isn't an atom fed blog snippets from your four most recent posts will appear on the tag profile page.

Empty fields in Profile

I'm getting started (again) at BlogHer and my profile is empty, I fill it in, and then it seems to disappear.  There is some info saved info from whenI first registered months ago, but nothing is sticking in the fields when I Edit my account.

Updating my picture

I attempted to upload a new picture but could never find a button that said "upload". I clicked "save" at the bottom of the page, but that didn't do the trick. How do I change my picture?

Pictures in profile

Log into BlogHer and click "edit my profile" on the right side of the profile page.

Click "account settings" scroll down to the picture section and check the box to delete current image.  Find the picture on your computer you want to use, by selecting the browse button.  Click save.

View your profile.  If you don't see the new image, do a hard refresh of your browser (hold CTRL and reload the browser)

If that doesn't work, email me denise@blogher.com and describe what the new image should look like - or send me a copy of the image that you wanted to upload.

Almost every time an image isn't uploading it's because the image is too large.  Open up an image editing program , view full size and then resize it down to 250 - 350 wide.

Profile & Tags issue

I'm new to the site and trying to set up my profile but my bio won't stick and I can't edit my tags, either. Does my profile need to be reset? Help! Thanks so much!

Yes it looks like it does

If you hold on just a wee bit longer, we're going to launch new profiles.... that should resolve this tag problem.
