Quilts (and blankets) for Comfort

Hi! I'm new here. Let me introduce myself:  though I describe myself as a wife, mother and writer, I am also the president of Katie's Comforters Guild (www.katiescomfortersguild.blogspot.com), a non-profit organization which I founded at Seattle Children's Hospital. Katie's Comforters is unique: we don't exist to raise financial support for the hospital, as most other guilds do; we raise BLANKETS.

Our guild was formed in memory of my daughter, Katie, who cherished her quilt (one that I made for her) while she was being treated for cancer. That comforter really did bring comfort to Katie during her long months in the hospital environment, and after her passing, to me. That comfort inspired me to sew for other patients, as I grieved for Katie.

In just one year, we have grown to 50 members, and donated hundreds of quilts to the hospital.

In case you are wondering, the cancer Katie had was adrenocortical carcinoma, an extremely rare condition. She had the best treatment available, but tragically, it did not save her life. We created an endowment (through the generosity of our family and friends)  to support cancer research. I write and speak publicly as an advocate. But Katie's Comforters Guild is just as important to me as advocacy, because the blankets are a hands-on way to lighten a person's suffering, right now.
