Daily Prompt: Quirk of Habit by michelle w. on January 12, 2014

Which quirky habit annoys you the most, and what quirky habit do you love — in yourself, or others.

~~~~~~~~
I think all of us have some sort of quirky habit.  I know I do; my books have to be lined a particular way in my bookshelves, my cabinets have to be organized in a certain way, even my flower gardens have to be lined in different areas of my yard.  I, also have some obsessive compulsive disorders, like: checking and re-checking to make sure I have taken the right medication, checking and re-checking to make sure everything is turned off and unplugged before I leave the house, and when I used to drive, I would check and re-check to make sure the doors were locked and the windows were up.  Since, I no longer drive, I only have the one control, to the passengers side window, but I still check and re-check that one window.  Another thing I thought of, for as long as I can remember, everything has to equal in fives.  That one is too hard to explain, but if anyone else has this disorder, they know what I mean. My husband has some quirky habits too.  He double checks his bowls, eating utensils, and plates before eating out of them, and sometimes goes to the extreme to re-wash them, just to make sure.  He washes his hands every time he touches something that might, even remotely, have a germ on it.  Then on the other side, he is a slob; he never throws anything in the garbage, it goes in the floor wherever he is sitting of standing.  He lets his ash trays over-flow to the point of cigarette butts spilling off on the table and eventually the floor.  To be so clean in some ways, he is such a slob in others. He takes showers sometimes two to three times a day and changes his clothes if he feels they are too sweaty or dirty.  He is also a night eater and whatever he eats at night ends up strewn in the bed, or scattered on the floor.  None of this bothers him. Some of his obsessive compulsive disorders are really out of control.  He worries obsessively about the house catching fire or getting flooded; he takes an extra pair of underwear and pants with him to work every day, just in case his pants split or he has an uncontrollable bowel movement; he talks out loud to himself frequently, and if he knows he has a dollar, he has to spend it. When he is at work, he will call me throughout the day to make sure I turned off the coffee pot, to make sure I’m watching the heaters and/or the fireplace, or to ask where the lake water level is. Thinking about all this made me begin to wonder if there was a link between quirky habits and obsessive compulsive disorders, so I had to look it up.  Following is what I found:
Dictionary.com defines quirky as: having or full of quirks.
Dictionary.com defines quirk as: a peculiarity of action, behavior, or personality; mannerism: He is full of strange quirks.
U.S. National Library of Medicine – The World’s Largest Medical Library Defines Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as: an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviors that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions).
I concluded that there is a fine line between quirky habits and obsessive compulsive disorder.  What it comes down to, for me, is that if a quirky habit turned into an obsession, it was no longer considered a quirky habit, but obsessive compulsive disorder.
Makes sense to me.
