My jaw dropped to see the recent development on Duggar's family. They are welcoming their 18Th (No, there is nothing wrong with your eye, I really wrote 18Th ) child. The Duggar's are said to be part of the Evangelical Christian movement called Quiverful, which encourages families to have as many children as possible. Guess what? They are inviting all of us to watch the birth of their through Television. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Duggar! Watch the Youtube video below to learn more about Duggars

Personally, pregnancy is a very hard process for me to handle. I gain weight like crazy and go on a see food diet(I see, I eat). I could never forget my Gynecologist, Dr. Umazaki's concerned voice. "Ms. Ponnaiya, if you don't stop gaining weight we are going to have some serious problems". No matter what he said, I couldn't stop gaining weight. I don't see Dr. Umazaki anymore, some say he retired, but I have this strange suspicion that I scared him away :)

Anyway, enough about me. While I complain so much just for couple of pregnancies and struggle raising my 2 monsters, Duggars are having babies left and right. Michelle Duggar really amazes me as a woman since she had been pregnant for 11 years in her life! I can't even imagine how their everyday life would be, even after watching their show on TLC. I remember myself thinking, "Does this lady ever sleep?" No pun intended.

Everything is fine, I really appreciate Duggar's perseverance and dedication, I really do. But what really concerns me is Quiverful's propaganda against all kinds of Birth controls including pills, which ultimately denies women's right to choose. This is not acceptable for me. They talk about the 'side effects' of using Birth control pills. I will take the 'side effects' over 'pregnancy effects' any time! So will millions of other American women.

Also, the option of career for women is  non existent in Quiverful families. They believe woman's job is to have children and raise them, I am seriously against this idea. May be because I come from South East Asian background where so many women struggle just to have basic rights in the society, I am little sensitive to this issue. There is a popular phrase in India, "Women should be seen, not heard". It outrages me every time I hear it. Is it really fair to deny employment opportunities and limit women to their homes? I don't think so.

There is one more thing I am concerned about, if everybody decides to follow Quiverful method, how are we going to manage the already exploding human population? So many wild species are almost non existent now because of us. We occupy their natural habitat, and use our technology to kill/control them if they ever dare to protest. How exactly do we deal with this? In the old days, we didn't have much medical advancements, which resulted in shorter human life span. So, people had as my kids as possible. The idea is, most of those children died before entering adulthood, only the strongest survived. The population was well under control.

Now, with the modern Medical advancement and technologies, the average life expectancy of an American adult is 79(approx) years, which is a dramatic increase when compared to the 1900's which is 49 years of age(approx). With this rate, I don't think an other species will even have a chance of survival. We have become the ultimate parasite, like it or not.
