Reclaim Your Energy in 5 Quick Steps
Do you ever wish you had more energy? Ha. I know, silly question. Who doesn't wish they had more energy? Everyone I talk to, no matter if they are parents or single, working or living a life of leisure, ill or not, they have the same goal: they want more energy.
It is easy to fantasize about winning the lottery and moving to Tahiti so you can relax and reclaim all the energy you lost sometime between college and today. But I can tell you that getting more energy doesn't require donating money to your local lottery commission. Instead, here are 5 quick things you can do to reclaim your energy today.
But wait, did I hear you say? "I don't have the time, or I have a chronic illness that leaves me fatigued? Seriously, more energy is just a fantasy."
No worries darling, these steps were designed just for you.
Step 1: Cozy up to the Rainbow
That would be the rainbow in your produce aisle or farmer's market. Yes, another reason to eat your vegetables. Vegetables give you energy, where other foods like sugar and junk food and even excessive amounts of animal protein can drain you of energy.
The foods to pay particular attention to get your mojo back are dark leafy greens and berries. These two categories of produce are mega-superfoods that will have you have tap-dancing (or whatever it is you like to do when you have more energy).
I suggest eating so many fruits and vegetables that you don't even want those donuts and Doritos. Highly processed, sugared, salted junk wears you out and takes you on a roller coaster of surges and crashes. Ditching the junk food and junk drinks will boost your energy like nobody's business.
Step 2: Stop Worrying
I know, if it were only that easy. But seriously, worrying wastes energy and wears you out. So if you can stop worrying, you can retain that energy for more fun things to do. How do you stop worrying?
Meditation and journaling are two quick and easy ways to release your worries. For example, with meditation you can learn how to calm your mind and stop the train of thoughts that race by when worrying.
Journaling, on the other hand, allows you to get your worries out on paper. Often seeing them in black and white purges the power they are holding over you. So write it out, then go meditate. Enjoy the calm mind and energy that results.
Step 3: Take a Deep Breath and Sit up Straight
Lack of oxygen makes you tired. If you sit at a desk all day, you are likely hunched over which means your oxygen intake is restricted. You can't take a deep breath if your shoulders are touching your earlobes, or you are crouched over your keyboard. So when you are feeling tired, sit up straight and take a deep breath. And I mean a big one. Let your belly expand. Breath deep. Blow it out. Repeat.
Step 4: Rest Your Body
Take a break. Get some sleep. Whether it's a 20 minute nap or 8 hours sleep, your body needs rest. Give it what it wants. Start by getting to bed by 10 or 11 p.m. And go ahead, close your office door or go sit in your car for 20 minutes with your eyes closed.

Step 5: Move It
Get out of that chair. Get up from the couch.
I know you know this already, but the evidence keeps rolling in about how great it is to move. It helps prevent certain types of colon cancer, it helps you lose weight, and best of all, it gives you more energy. So even if you have a desk job, get up and move. The next time you are on a conference call, put it on speaker (if you're not in a cube) and walk around or do lunges while listening in. Or put on ear phones and dance to your favorite tunes for 5 minutes. Whatever it takes, get moving.
So next time you are feeling sluggish, take a nap, journal your worries away, clear your mind through meditation, get up and move, turn on your favorite tunes and have an apple.
