I used to pride myself on being able to find anything, music-wise. Give me a challenge. Name the oddest, most long out-of-print slab of vinyl and I could find it. I love brick and mortar record stores, obviously, but since the advent of iTunes and other downloading sites, I, like the rest of world, don't shop them so much anymore. And don't get me wrong, one-stop shopping is a good thing. I'm more likely now than ever before to take a chance on something. (Being able to buy the one cool song on a record without having to buy the whole album is a blessing, too, even if I grumble about the death of "The Album.") But I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel even the smallest twinge of guilt. Enter Record Store Day:

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances.

If you live in a city with at least one cool independently owned record store, you might want to check this out, and reconnect with your inner music geek this Saturday. Says Whitney Matheson of Pop Candy:

The event was such a success last year that they're bringing it back April 18. Record stores across the country will participate in the effort with special performances, releases and other festivities. Record Store Day is designed to celebrate independently owned record shops -- places that should be preserved but, sadly, seem to be fading fast.

Which makes visiting your local indies even more important.Other bloggers on Record Store Day:

Thank you for this post. I'm sad that I found it too late to participate. Many of my favorite local record shops have closed over the past few years. On the closing day of my closest record shop I went in to say goodbye and the owner reminisced about watching me transform fromt a punk-y youngster to a professional adult over my years of shopping there. He reminded me that stores like his had been my community for many years. Others had churches or youth groups, but I went to record stores to find my kindred spirits, both in their stock and in their staff.

Maybe the next generation of music nerds will find that community online, but there's nothing like the camaraderie of the brick and mortar stores.

in Austin TX is my shop.

I am cultivating my CD collection to pass on to my son, but at 18, he has clearly surpassed my teaching. He loves Hendrix, which I do not but I have in my collection. He loves german punk bands that I am oblivious to but will pull some CDs to add to the collection.  I am all about the mp3 downloads on limewire..yes, I am a stealer of music but I give back as much as I take, so my karma is in the clear.

Its not the smae collecting music on the computer as it is with an entire wall unit of CDs. The artwork that goes into the covers and the feel of sitting on the floor in front of the stereo pulling out Jethro Tull or Tool while my friends sit around the cocktail table.

I have been to parties where everyone sits around while the host hits the pc  for their grooves...not the same but I am an retro hippy reject who loves it when the cd cover is passed around among other things.

I also have an old  vitrola that I wind up and play some great goodies but that is for my intimate get togethers.

My Ipod is not the same, although it rocks on my bose speakers during a pool party.

I love the audiophile but I am too ADD to pull obscurity from my head, so I am in ahh of you and those that can. My recall is only as good as my collection.
