Recovered from bulimia, Candace Cameron Bure uses low-carb diet to feel 'better than ever'

For all those women who contend that getting older means weight gain, sags and bags are inevitable, Candace Cameron Bure has a message: With the help of a low-carb diet, exercise and a positive attitude, she feels "like I look better now than I ever did in my 20s," said the former "Full House" actress in an interview with Us Weekly. 

But her journey involved struggling both with faith and with food. She battled an eating disorder, bulimia, and learned to change her priorities and focus in order to recover her health emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Cameron tells her full story in the book "Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness" (click for details).

"This book is a culmination of years being asked by many women how I’ve done it. How have I managed to have 3 kids and be in better shape now than I was at 18? My life has been quite a journey, including some struggles which I openly share in my book. But, it’s not a tell-all memoir or a new diet plan. Ultimately, this book is about putting 
your faith into the forefront of your relationship with food. I’ve 
included recipes, personal stories, photos and most importantly lots 
of practical information and advice to motivate you to get healthy and  
stay on track from a biblical perspective," she said in an interview with Actor's Diet.

As for her food plan? Cameron described her typical day. The principles: No white flour or starches, no sugar. It emphasizes protein and vegetables, and primarily adheres to the principles of the NSNG (No Sugar, No Grains) diet advocated by celebrity fitness trainer Vinnie Tortich in "Fitness Confidential." It's (i.e., NSNG). A sample day:

  • Breakfast: 2 eggs or egg whites with veggies.
  • Lunch: On set- whatever protein they offer without sauce, like chicken or fish. I usually pass on the ribs.  Green salad, dressing on the side and any steamed veggies they offer. Iced tea.
  • Dinner: pretty much the same stuff as lunch. Protein and veggies. I don’t eat a lot of white flour or starches (except with sushi!!).
  • Twice a week, Cameron allows herself a small,sweet such as a few pieces of chocolate or other dessert (see her list of essentials at the end).
  • Snacks- fruit, almonds, veggies, and granola.

In addition, Cameron manages to make time for exercise, as evidenced by her grace on the dance floor in competing on "Dancing with the Stars." As for how she makes time for fitness? The title of her second book says it all: "Balancing It All: My Story of Juggling Priorities and Purpose" (click for details).

Cameron views exercise as essential for her well-being. " I love running on the beach and in the Winter, I’m in the gym doing 30 minutes of cardio, usually the elliptical machine and I recently started weight training about 30 minutes a day which I LOVE. I’m seeing definition in my arms I’ve never seen before! I love Pilates," she said.
