A North Carolina Representative wants to cut funding to a program for low-income women who never learned how to breast-feed. The program that operates through WIC (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) receives funds set aside for breast-feeding support and education through one-on-one peer counselors.
In my opinion Rep. Virginia Foxx is not thinking ahead. If we do not teach these mothers how to breast-feed the WIC program will end up paying for formula for the baby for a year or more. I have not seen the numbers but, you would think that the breast-feeding program would help save that state money in the long run. I believe that a little up-front cost to help a woman raise a healthy child would be a good investment. I don't want to get into the formula vs. breast debate but, if breast milk truly is healthier for the child wouldn't this program also cut down on future medical bills this child that the government may have to pay? I believe there are a lot of ways that the government needs to cut back on spending but, let's look at the bigger picture here.
This is not about political sides it is about breast-feeding. I am all for breast-feeding and I know that contrary to popular belief breast-feeding does not just happen. It is a natural thing but, it takes work just like anything else you learn as a parent or teach your child. I believe that any woman that wants to breast-feed her child should have the resources to help her do so.
What's your opinion?
Would this be the first program on your "cut list"?
