From Rescues to Rockstars, the Furry Fashionistas of BlogHer '12!

I can still remember the first time I saw my dog Molly. It was August 29th, 2006. She was in pretty rough shape, with some medical issues that needed attention (and let's face it, money), but as soon as her paws hit the floor, she was like a toy who had been newly wound up. Goofy and playful, running all over the place, jumping up and trying to give kisses. And she opened up a place in my heart that I never knew existed before (and yes, I realize what a cheesy line that is, but it doesn't make it any less true). I think that's the beautiful thing about adopting a pet. That symbiotic relationship. You may be rescuing them, but they rescue you right back, in their own way.
She's my sidekick, my constant.
There are so many animals out there, like Molly, who need homes. And when you adopt from a shelter, you're not just getting your new pet, you're getting amazing resources as well. At shelters like the ASPCA and the SF SPCA (where I have spent some time volunteering), basic medical care is covered, from vaccinations and exams; and most often if a pet has a more serious condition, they have plans to help you with their treatment. They also have volunteers who spend hours socializing and training the animals to be great companions, and offer training classes to help you with your new pet. They care about the well-being of the animals, not about turning a profit.
Our Fashion Show sponsor, PetSmart, is a strong supporter of pet adoption, as is their partner ASPCA, and we were so proud to showcase rescue dogs as our dog models. Every dog model belonged to either a BlogHer or ASPCA staff member, and was originally a rescue.
Shelters across the country have dogs and puppies up for adoption that need loving homes; why not save a life while bringing home your new best friend? Visit www.aspca.org/adopt to learn more about pet adoption and to find a local animal shelter near you. And if you can't have a pet in your rental, consider volunteering!
Here's a recap of our furry fashionistas, rocking that PetSmart gear like nobody's business, with a little more about their adoption stories.
