Retirement? What's That?
By pinkmelange on November 08, 2011
Today, my coworkers and I attended a retirement party for a woman who had worked in our program for at least 30 years. It was a really nice sendoff with a Christmas theme. (Yes I know. It’s just November.) She was always in charge of our holiday get-togethers, so it was appropo.
There were people who had retired or left the program before many of us had even started there. It was really interesting little mix of folks.
Everyone who got up to talk spoke highly of the honoree and had funny stories to tell. Then there was the Chinese gift exchange. Everyone made a big fuss about taking other people’s gifts and getting the best gifts, but in the end there was a surprise. All the gifts had been purchased for the honoree and we had tricked her with her last “Chinese” gift exchange.
I was touched by the conraderie and sheer affection for our honoree. I didn’t know her very well, but I do know she was well loved.
The other thing that interested me was the thought of doing the same job for 30 years!
I have very few friends or associates who have been on the same job for 10 years, and I’m not some twenty something with twenty something year old friends. All my friends are at least forthy-three and so am I. I always felt like I would never retire. I could see myself working until I keeled over somewhere.
So my question to you is this: If you had to do a job for thirty years, what would it be? I would, of course, be a writer.
