I'm Bringing My Best B-Girl Stance to the Party. Are YOU?
By addyeB on July 18, 2014
I'll just come right out with it: I damn near lost my mind when BlogHer announced that Rev. Run is appearing at next week's closing party at BlogHer 14.
I don't think I've shouted like that since the last church service I attended three years ago. I spent a good five minutes running around our bedroom whisper screaming in an attempt to praise the hip hop heavens but not wake the baby. I think I even called my husband a "Sucka MC" when he asked why I was poplocking on our bed.
REV. RUN. RUN-DMC.
Look, there is only one thing I love more than Prince, and that is DANCE.
Sure, I've been blessed with rhythm and the moves like Jagger, but even if rhythm wouldn't touch me with a ten foot pole, I'd still be *that* woman wildly throwing her body around on the dance floor, happily clapping to the beat in between.
This is love for dance is the foundation of my love affair with hip-hop. Oh sure, I enjoy an emcee with a wicked slick flow who can tell a story. My husband and I compare our lists of The Greats annually. But it's the BEATS underneath the flow that seize me, causing my body to sync with the groove and rock with the bass.
As a child of the 80's and 90's, I grew up bopping to songs by artists like Biz Markie, LL Cool J, Naughty By Nature, Will Smith, Tone Loc, The Beastie Boys, Snoop, Tupac & Biggie, Puffy & Mase in their shiny suit days, MC Hammer, Rob Base, and yes, even early pioneers of the genre like Afrika Bambatta & The Sugar Hill Gang.
But my ultimate favorite has and always will be Run DMC. Start playing the beats to songs like "King of Rock", "Peter Piper", or "Tricky", and I'm liable to break out not just my B-girl stance, but also The Tootsie Roll, Wop, Da Butt, a Body Roll, The Wobble, or The Kid & Play. Speaking of K & P, remember them? If not, allow me to jog your memory...
Yes, yes y'all, it's going DOWN next Saturday y'all with Rev. Run rockin the mic. This is looking to be the mother of all dance parties, the kind where you'll need to trade your heels for some shell tops, so if I were you, I'd check your cute at the door and come ready to leave it all on the dance floor. Come find me. I'll be the person in the middle doing this....
What dance moves are you bringing? Let's hear it!
