This book interrupted my otherwise very scheduled reading list because they offered a free read on netgalley. It was a fun enough read that I’m glad I took the chance to do it.
What I did like about this book is that it was fun, the characters are sweet—some of them very funny—and it was a nice light read for a lazy afternoon. And, I keep finding myself daydreaming about turning back time and enrolling into spy school instead of high school. I’m pretty sure I would have been awesome at that. I also loved the pop culture references. Especially the Buffy and Spike ones. And I loved the sisterhood among the girls at the academy. The love interest was cute (if not particularly spectacular) and its always fun to go on the first love journey with a new character.
Otherwise, I wanted a bit more from the plot. I think when I first started it, I expected it to me more like the Heist Society series—also a story about a 15 year old girl, but with a lot more intensity. I guess I expected the girls from Gallagher Academy to be doing spy stuff in the real world. The problem was really more about my expectations that the book. I did feel like there was some back story on several of the characters that didn’t play with the rest of the plot. BUT, there are several more books to this series (the 5th is due out this year) and this book was fun enough for me, that I will definitely be reading the others to see if I can get more of what I’m looking for.
If you haven’t read anything by Ally Carter before, I’d recommend the Heist Society series over this one. BUT, if you’ve read Heist Society and like it, then definitely give this a try. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
