According to People, actress Rue McClanahan died this morning of a massive stroke. She was 76 years old.
Rue McClanahan was probably known best best for her role as Blanche Devereaux on the hit television series "The Golden Girls." My friend Mark always called her "The Slutty Golden Girl." I wouldn't normally say something like that about the recently deceased, but I get the impression that Rue would have laughed at that.
According to the New York Daily News, McClanahan played Blanche in 180 episodes of "The Golden Girls" and was rewarded with four Emmy nominations (and one win in 1987) for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and three Golden Globe nominations for Best Performance by an actress in a TV series.
McClanahan was more than just Blanche Devereaux. In addition to a successful Broadway career and appearing in nearly twenty films, she played Vivian on "Maude," Fran on "Mama's Family" and Caroline Johnson on "Another World."
Rue was also a breast cancer survivor and an animal rights activist.
Ms. McClanahan passed away early this morning at New York Presbyterian Hospital with her family by her side.
She will be missed.
