Romney and Obama Political Fashion Statements

Last month, Urban Outfitters caused a stir when it released a line of “ironic” Mitt Romney t-shirts, bearing slogans like “Too Legit to Mitt” and “Mitt is the Shit”. And the Internets exploded with debates about whether the designs are meant to be ironic or iconic. The chain, which makes hipsterdom accessible to mall shoppers, sold the gear with Shepard Fairy’s Obama graphic during 2008, but its CEO Richard Hayne has also donated to conservative Rick Santorum.
Maybe the Republicans are reaching out to a younger, more fashionable voters.
Maybe it’s an attempt to portray a more populist image, after Ann Romney appeared on CBS wearing a Reed Krakow bird print blouse with a nearly $1000 price tag.
Of course, it may be a case of keeping up with the Obamas, with Michelle's style making fashion headlines since the 2008 campaign. Who could forget the Jason Wu dress the First Lady wore to the inauguration?
Michelle Obama has worn her share of pricey couture – and I actually don’t begrudge either Obama or Romney for sporting clothes that cost as much as car or mortgage payments for the rest us – after all, it's sartorial inspiration, and isn’t that what First Ladies (and Presidents, for that matter) on both sides of the aisles have always done?
But in keeping with the Obamas high-low style and support of emerging (and often minority) designers, Obama for America is also selling a slew of shirts and accessories on its website. Called Runway to Win, the collection features tees, tote bags, and even nail polish from many designers. And for Democrats with deeper pockets, Sarah Jessica Parker and Vogue editor Anna Wintour are hosting a $40,000-a-plate fundraiser for Obama.
