Running Out of Bloggy Ideas

[Editor's Note: All writers worry at some point that they're going to run out of things to say, and bloggers are no different. A Bit Backward explains how she overcomes her fear of the blinking cursor, and I love the point she makes about why she blogs; how it brings her life into focus. --Mel]

But I have to wonder, and do wonder: Can one person really produce creative/thought-provoking/worthwhile/carefully edited content every single day - or even every other day for that matter? Am I cut out for this? So much thinking, typing, editing, second-guessing, and retyping go into every post I write. And to be a successful blogger they say you need to write something - anything - as often and consistently as you can.

This is great! I actually wrote something along these same lines on my blog at http://misswordy.com/how-to-writing-prompts-and-everyday-subjects/ if you want to check it out. Thanks for posting this and I love your writing! :)

writing is thinking for many of us. love it. so true about forgetting things- I learned this lesson many times with lines for poems that were brilliant (I swear, they were brilliant!) but forgotten. ;) I type all ideas into my iPhone now.

Mama One to Three I'm still trying to convince my husband I need an iPad - you know - to preserve my ideas. . . Haha! ;) But in all seriousness, paper/pen or something with texting ability is a must have around the clock tool as a writer! If you don't write when you're receiving the inspiration, well you won't write anything inspiring - that's for sure! Thanks for reading and commenting! :)

I can relate. I got excited at the thought of writing a new blog and by the second day I panicked, wondering if I had enough thought-provoking writing to produce.

TaysMom27 Writing - especially in a public setting - IS intimidating for so many reasons! I think our own fears/insecurities are our biggest obstacles most of the time: What if people disagree and I don't know what to say? What if I misspell everything and sound dumb? What if no one cares to read it at all? What if I don't like what I write? What if I don't know enough? What if I have nothing left to say after I write this thing I have in my mind?

Sometimes, like I did this summer, I'll take a break. But I always warn, I mean inform, my readers that I'll be back so they'll know to look for me again.

@ Diane and Leslie: Loosening up our expectations keeps blogging enjoyable! (And, gives us more fuel to add to our blogging flame for sure.)

@ Delores: A novel concept - writing when we actually want to! ;) This "mood" you're talking about, reminds me of another awesome TED speech I saw once: http://youtu.be/86x-u-tz0MA It's her take on "Genius" in creation. What do you think?

@ Niki: If you want your family to be the main topic you blog about, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing just that! Blogs serve different purposes, and if keeping a family journal/scrapbook is your main objective, then you shouldn't feel silly at all! :) In fact, sometimes I feel silly for the exact opposite reason - I worry that my blog is too much of a potpurri-style blog for it to be successful! The general advice out there is to find a niche (which is sounds like you have) and stick with it! Rules schmules - right? :)

I used to write one blog every.single.day. And then i ran out of energy and ideas. Now i write every two days or so and i always have something to say! Thats why I blog :)

I don't put any pressure on myself to blog a certain number of times a week. I just write when the mood hits. I think that makes for more interesting topics.

I feel a little silly about blogging about my life and not expanding to include other things. I am also pretty bad about making sure I blog on M, W and F.
