The 2010 Emmy Award nominations were announced today, with Glee, Mad Men and HBO’s miniseries The Pacific pulling in the most attention.
CNN reported that “Emmy nominations smile on Glee:”
The Fox series about a misfit-filled glee club earned 19 nominations Thursday morning as the picks for the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced. Among the nods: best comedy series, best actor in a comedy series for Matthew Morrison and best actress in a comedy series for Lea Michele.
More important, Glee's Jane Lynch was nominated in the supporting actress in a comedy series category, so I'm not going to quibble that the Glee Power of Madonna episode shouldn’t have been overlooked in the writing category. Glee really didn't need 20 nominations--that would have been greedy.
For the most part, I agree with the Emmy picks. Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Lost, Modern Family -- all very deserving of the big category thumbs-ups they received. You can review the entire list on the official Emmy Awards site.
But some glaring oversights in major categories leave me puzzled. As Jane’s character Sue Sylvester is wont to say: You know what's hard? Being robbed of an Emmy nomination when you are best of the best, that’s hard!
For example: RuPaul, you were robbed! Robbed! I loved watching Kate Gosselin lumber around on Dancing with the Stars as much as the next viewer, but LOGO's RuPaul’s Drag Race is stellar reality competition programming that could hold its own in many a category. To ignore the Queen of Queens is unforgivable!
I was thrilled to see NBC's The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien listed in the variety/comedy show category while Jay and David Letterman were skipped, but overlooking NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon? The Emmys blew it. Late Night is smart, funny, books great guests and pulls together timely sketches with an SNL influence, and it's ashame he's been eclipsed in the late night drama.
The outstanding comedy nominations for 30 Rock, Modern Family, Nurse Jackie (big cheers for that one!), Curb Your Enthusiasm and Glee are all great choices. Why The Office still merits inclusion is baffling enough, but the omission of one of the funniest shows on television, FX's It's Always Sunny in Philadephia? Criminal!
I also can't co-sign an Emmy list that forgot 30 Rock's Tracy Morgan this year in favor of a nomination for Two and a Half Men's Jon Cryer. Are you serious, Emmys? It's because of Tracy that I live every week like it's Shark Week! Watch this and then please edit your nominations. At least they skipped Charlie Sheen this year.) Tracy, man, you were victimized!
The True Blood situation has my fangs sprung. HBO's True Blood garnered a nom for Outstanding Drama, but the actors and writing were seriously neglected. Perhaps this is because the show is as much a rich, dark comedy as it is a drama, and the layers don't make it easy to categorize. But still, no supporting mention for Nelsan Ellis, who plays Lafayette? Ryan Kwanten is hilarious as Jason Stackhouse, but no love for him? Neither Anna Paquin nor Stephen Moyer took a nomination, nor did the powerful Alexander Skarsgard, who plays Eric. A Best Casting nomination just doesn't cover it, especially in the absence of an Outstanding Writing hit. Alan Ball, this was larceny, and fangbangers aren't going to let the Emmys get away with it.
Speaking of HBO, where is the Emmy attention for Treme? They only netted two: for music and for directing. That's a shame, because Emmy nominations can help direct audience attention to programming that otherwise might be undiscovered, and I would have liked Treme to get the attention given to HBO's Temple Grandin and PBS' The Buddha, two programs that were rightfully recognized.
