Rupert Murdoch, Wendi Deng, and an Embarrassing Pie in the Face

Editor's Note: Today Rupert Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks testified before members of Parliament about the News International phone hacking scandal, which has resulted in a wave of resignations and arrests, including Brooks'. Murdoch, the CEO of News International parent company News Corp, refused to take personal responsibility for the scandal and said he has no plans to resign.
A lot of today's news stories centered around the pie in the face Murdoch received from activist Johnny Marbles and discussions of Murdoch's Chinese-born wife Wendi Deng, whose quick jab at the pie-wielding activist spurred headlines like Crouching Tiger, Flying Murdoch, Tiger Wife, and Wendi Deng's Charlie's Angel Moment."
That's why I found this perspective by s.e. smith at Tiger Beatdown intriguing when I read it. Smith took issue with the tone of the coverage of Deng (both by journalists and among her Twitter community. -- Julie
Evidently, a successful Chinese-American businesswoman who thinks quickly on her feet when her husband is attacked by an activist bearing pie is a ‘ninja’ with ‘Chinese superpower[s].’ (Intriguingly, Piers Morgan deleted his ‘#ChineseSuperpower’ Tweet, but ample retweets survive as evidence.) Racist humour is a cheap and easy shot, and it was the order of the day here, including on my Twitter feed, which includes a large number of supposed ‘progressives.’
