On Safari at Zarafa Camp, Botswana
By kellymarielane on October 23, 2013
From Toka Leya we took a quick flight over to Zarafa Camp in the Selinda Reserve in Botswana. Zarafa is only a four-tent camp, so it's very private and felt like it was built just for us!
Zarafa means "the beloved one" or "the lovely one" in Arabic. The name comes from a giraffe, which was presented to Charles X of France in 1826 by the Viceroy of Egypt. The giraffe was a sensation to all who saw her, and provided inspiration. The new Zarafa Camp lives up to the name, inspiring even the well traveled, and renewing the spirit of all who visit. Immediately upon landing on the airstrip at the camp, we were picked up by Dux, our hilarious and spirited guide for the time we were there. Since this was my first safari I was excited to see every amazing animal in its natural habitat! So we climbed aboard the LandRover and went out to see what we could find.
My new favorite bird: Lilac Breasted Roller
After we took our things to the room and had an afternoon tea, we met back up with Dux and took another drive out to a pontoon boat for sundowners on the lake. It was INCREDIBLE. A cold glass of wine after a long day of safari-ing never tasted so good!
When we got back to the camp they had prepared an amazing and elaborate dinner, followed by a group pow-wow at the firepit to continue talking about all of the fantastic things we'd experienced that day. Botswana, I'm yours!
