Yeah, I know, I said I was going to post U-Haul vs The Long Haul this week, but then I heard this clip of a speech by Sally Kern, (R) Rep Oklahoma, and it really hit a nerve. She thought she was speaking to 50 people, I have a hard time imaging that anyone would think these things were OK to say even to one person, but thanks to the internet, it turns out that now she's speaking to the world. And the world is listening.
I was so dumbfounded by this speech that I'm not even sure which quote of hers I found most offensive. Right off the bat, she starts with the zingers, "the homosexual agenda is destroying this nation. OK. It's just a fact." Really? That's a fact? I mean I didn't even realize that I had an agenda, let alone that I was involved with all the other gays in a mass conspiracy to destroy the nation. Silly me, I really thought that perhaps the widening of the poverty gap was destroying our nation. Or maybe our failing education system. Or the divorce rate. Or gang culture. Or the fight over illegal immigrants. Or the war on drugs. Or the rift in the country over the war in Iraq. Or the credit crisis. Or the rising cost of damn near everything, thanks to the rising price of oil. Just to name a few things that I think are destroying the nation.

We don’t have an Agenda or a Lifestyle. Rock stars have “lifestyles,” high society politicians have “lifestyles,” The Queen has a “lifestyle.”
We have A Life.
We go to work, we go to school, we attend our kids’ school concerts and soccer games, we take care of our home, we go to The Grand Canyon on vacation, we do all of the typical things that every other American Family does on a daily basis. We volunteer, we contribute to charity, we pay taxes, and we VOTE. I fail to see how our Life is Dangerous?

Kern goes on to say, "I'm not anti, I'm not gay bashing. But according to God's word that is not the right kind of lifestyle." God's word? Shall we talk about who it is with an agenda? Her god may not think homosexuality is a right lifestyle, but what bearing should that have on my civil rights. Last time I checked, I do still have the right to exercise my brand of religion, or lack there of, and my god is just fine with me being gay. So just where do her rights end, and mine begin?

Since you are such a know it all on the bible, I hope you haven’t been eating shrimp or wearing blend fabrics or you will be joining all the scary gay people in hell. You should step up your wardrobe a bit though, those gay folks can be snappy dressers. You don’t want them showing you up in hell cause that would just be embarrassing.
Read the full post Letter I sent to Sally Kern (R) OK on her "statement"
Also, I'm not sure how Sally thinks her statements can be construed as anything other then anti-gay. Um hello. Can you hear yourself Sally? "Gays are infiltrating our city councils [...] Have you heard that the city of Eureka Springs is now controlled by gays?" Or what about, "What's happening now is they're going after, in schools. Two year olds. You know why they are trying to get early childhood education? They want to get our young children into government schools so they can indoctrinate them [...] to get them to think that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable lifestyle." Do those statements sound positive to anyone? In fact they sound a little conspiracy theory to me. And why is she so worried about people being accepting of difference. Is she afraid it's like a gateway to believing in evolution.
Perhaps the most inflammatory statement she made, and you had to know it was coming, was when she said, "I honestly think it's the biggest threat our nation has, even more than terrorism or Islam. Which I think is a big threat. OK." Wow, she's compares gay people to terrorists and maligns the world's 2nd largest religion in fell statement. She can't even be serious here. That's just crazy talk. Why would we, the gay population, want to destroy the society we live in? That is the implication of using the word terrorism here, that we wish to incite fear in order to destroy our society. It just doesn't even make sense. We are just like everyone else. We want the same things in life as every other American. And we want the same rights everyone else has. We're not looking turn everyone gay, or anyone for that matter. I fail to see how this equates to terrorism. If the thought of my partner and I having a life together makes her live in constant state of fear such that it alters her daily life, as she implies, then she's got some big problems. Is she so insecure in her own sexuality that only one brand of it can exist?
Sally Kern refuses to apologize for her speech. She has issued a statement in which she says, "a vigorous debate on an issue is not 'hate speech' - it's free speech. " I think Dr Bruce Perscott's, who writes at Mainstream Baptist, posted a fantastic exercise about her assertion that she need not apologize. He pulled a quote from her speech and first changed the word homosexuals to Jews. He figured that still might not have much impact, so then he changed it the word homosexual to Christian.
So, what if politically powerful politicians were saying:
Matter of fact, studies show that no society that has totally embraced Christianity has lasted more than, you know, a few decades. So it's the death nell to this country. I honestly think it's the biggest threat that our nation has -- even more so than terrorism, or Islam, which I think is a big threat, OK? Because what's happening now, they're going after, in schools, two year olds!
Can anyone imagine a right-wing evangelical, sensitive to even the slightest hint of persecution, sitting still for that?
Read full post Kern Refuses Apology,
While Betty Please and I were discussing this this morning, I said something to the effect of, "so I wonder what her big skeleton is. You know she has one. They always do. Some big gay skeleton I bet." I later found that Sally just might have a gay son, who she has of course disowned. I'm just wondering how she allowed her son to be indoctrinated by the gays. Must have been because she hadn't passed that bill, so the school never notified her that her son was in the gay-straight alliance. Cause you know, "kids are getting involved in these groups, their lives are being ruined, their parents don't know about it..."
I certainly hope she doesn't truly represent the people of Oklahoma.

Responding to a Demagogue
I understand the importance of responding to Kern’s statement. But to me, anyone, speaking on any subject, who says things like “It's just a fact” without providing proof as to the validity of their statement, or “according to God's word that is not… right” (again, a statement that cannot be backed with evidence), is no more than a demagogue and cannot possibly be taken seriously.

Generally I agree with you,
Generally I agree with you, she is a demagogue and I wouldn't take her seriously if she were just Joe Blow off the street. But she is not jsut some random person, she is an elected official with the power to make and vote on laws. She is in a positon of power, and she is a leader. While she may not be directly targeting or acting out the gay population, her words lend credence to others who would.
The fact that the her fellow republicans gave her a standing ovation for this speech, should tell you that more than a few people take her seriously.
The Kerns of the World Are Not Going Anywhere
As kazari points out in her comment below, it’s obvious that many share Kern's views but choose political correctness over speaking their mind. In a way, it’s easier to deal with Kern because with her, at least you know where you stand. History proves that demagogues can certainly be dangerous and have influence, so she absolutely needed to be addressed, but it’s impossible to have a dialogue when the other side uses phrases like “it’s a fact” or “it’s God’s word”.
I think I was trying to say that while it needs to be addressed, it is pretty much hopeless, because people like her and her supporters don’t listen. They already have all the “facts” and they “know” what God wants. So when kazari says “then we can go find somebody better”, and when Gina says “I hope the citizens of OK take note”, I’m not sure it’s going to happen, because the Kerns of the world will always have supporters who share their views and want to see them elected. Perhaps the value of addressing her comments is to get to those who are on the fence, still building their political identity.

Codefying Idiocy in the Bible's Name Is Never
Cool
At first I wanted to ignore the idiotic statements. I have a policy of letting the Ass bray so I know which direction not to enter into. I had to stop myself and make sure I listened with attention.
You know what this echoes? They stuff they use to say about potential communists agitators in the 1950's. It is the same mess they said in the 1950s-60s concerning African Americans. Native American. Latino/Latina Americans and anyone that didn't look or think like they do.
This woman is getting praise for coded hate speech. If it was just one ding-a-ling it would be sad. But she was applauded for her comments. In a government building.
Now we got problems. I hope the citizens of OK take note who clapped and whooped it up come election time.

History does tend to repeat itself, doesn't it. It's the same crap, different day. I would hope that the voters take note, but other than the internet, is this story getiing much attention?
Did you see Tucker's letter?
I saw it on the Knit Like a Man blog where it's posted in its entirety. Tucker is a high school student whose mother was killed in the Oklahoma City bombing. It's fantastic.

OK that's sad
I mean seriously. Depressing. I would like to have seen the look on Kern's face when she read that letter or when someone read it to her.

Tucker's letter is the most
Tucker's letter is the most well worded, well reasoned response I've seen. And I feel so sad for him having lost his mother in the Oklahoma City bombing. I had not seen that letter. I think I'll edit my post to add that link. Thanks.
thank goodness she said it.
Before you bite, I think she's abhorrent, paranoid and scary.
But we need our politicians to stand up and say this stuff. We need to hear it.
because imagine if she only said it behind closed doors - imagine if we never knew she held these beliefs. these are the basic values things we need to know about the people who claim to represent us.
then we can go find somebody better.
Yes, it's good to see her
Yes, it's good to see her true colors. I just hope the voters in her district do not hold the same ideals as she does.
very disturbing
I think the most hurtful thing she said was when she likened being gay to having cancer. If people like her were not so hateful, being gay would be like being heterosexual (as it should be). I was really disturbed by what she said. And I think that even though everyone is not listening to what we say about her comments, we need to say them because some people are listening. I do not relinquish my rights to free speech just because she abuses hers.

Where are the straight screams?
I don't know why US straight bloggers aren't yelling about this. It's really shocking. Is it that they don't know about it? Or is the USA so polarized by now that each group is left to fight its own battles?

Interesting question
Though I was just on another site, where I had linked Zoe's post, and asked for GLBT thoughts on Kern and the only response I got was from someone who suggested "Kern had no clout" and "she prefers to put those kinds of morons on ignore and pretend they don't exist".
So yea. I'm confused about why the heteros aren't talking about this but until the queers can get it together enough to get interested....

I wish I had an answer to
I wish I had an answer to that question. I guess because they have nothing to lose. I don't think it's just that the US is polarized on this issue, I think it's that too many citizen of the US are apathetic and think someone else will take care of it. I mean really, how sad is it that more people vote for American Idol than for the US President, let alone that they would vote for their local and state legislators.
It reminds me of this (as inscribed at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum):
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out -
because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out -
because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out -
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me.
I would seem that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
