All you Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans take note: Sarah Michelle Gellar is on her way back to prime time TV, and I, for one, am jazzed!

NEW YORK - MAY 05: Actress Sarah Michelle Geller arrives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala, Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2008 in New York City. (Photo by Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images)

Gellar has been cast in a new pilot for CBS called Ringer, a thriller about identical twins sisters, one of whom ends up dead and the other who ends up on the run from the mob.

The producer of the pilot, Peter Traugott did an interview with EW.com about the show and gives some details:

She plays two characters: One is Bridget, the sister who takes over Siobhan’s life—Siobhan’s the other sister. The sisters reunite after having been estranged for a long time, and when they reunite, Siobhan dies.

As a big fan of the show Damages, I was thrilled to hear Traugott also say:

I love Damages—by the way, it’s my favorite show—but in the same way that Damages tells part of the story in the present, through the past. Not just flashbacks but through actual stories in the past. That’s what’s happening here. Hopefully if we go to series, the audience will come to understand what the fall out was between Siobhan and Bridget.

Why Siobhan would never want to see her sister again, why Bridget was in a kind of dark place in her life—all that stuff will be told as we move forward in Bridget’s stories through flashbacks with Siobhan.

I love the idea. I love the comparison to Damages' storytelling. I love that it's a thriller. You can count this Buffy fan in. All in.

Just think of the potential for guest stars! Alyson Hannigan (witchy Willow Rosenberg) is already part of the CBS family on How I Met Your Mother so there's no reason she shouldn't stop by for a visit. Then there's James Marsters (Spike, aka William the Bloody) who's already playing a baddie on Hawaii Five-0. There's no reason he can't stop by as well.

Oh the possibilities!

Gellar has been one a bit of a hiatus since getting married to Freddie Prinze, Jr. and then having her daughter, Charlotte a couple of years ago. Though her post-Buffy acting life consisted of movie roles, for my money, TV is where she really belongs.

Before her Buffy days, Gellar hit it big on television in the soap world when she was cast as Kendall Hart, the long-lost daughter of Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) on All My Children. Kendall was a bad girl with a vulnerable side, and Gellar won a Daytime Emmy for the role.

Her best film role and coincidentally, the closest to her role of Kendall on AMC was as a conniving teen in Cruel Intentions. The film was a modern day take on Dangerous Liaisons and starred a young Reese Witherspoon and a scrumptious-looking Ryan Phillippe.

As great as Gellar was in it, it reinforced for me the fact that she's one of the many actors and actresses who simply make their greatest impact on television. They tend to get lost on the big screen, but when it comes to the small screen, they shine.

I watched a couple of Buffy episodes from the final season a few weeks ago, and I was reminded again what a good actress she is. With the comparison to Damages, let's hope Ringer gets the kind of writing mojo that made that show so spectacular. If it does, Gellar will grab the role and run with it.

It's funny, when SMG left AMC, I thought, this gal will never get another role as good as Kendall Hart. Wow, was I wrong!

So you just never know. Have faith!

Megan,

I'm going to watch for a bit, but, Buffy was her signature performance and if she's not surrounded by ghouls, goblins and vamps...what's that about!

Anyhow, maybe if hubby
played her love interest?

Still a fan though...

It'll be interesting to see if SMG shows up as a blond or a brunette in the show. :-)

"Buffy" is just about the best show ever on TV, so no matter what happens, we'll always have that.

I understand how you feel, but I'm thinkin' this show has some solid potential.

And Sarah's in good company when it comes to formerly "bigger and better than TV" actors on TV.

TV's where it's at right now because there are a whole lot of channels and a whole lot of shows and a whole lot more potential for quality writing.

I know you're eager but the pilot hasn't even been shot yet!

There's no word yet where it will end up on CBS's schedule. Depending on how things go, hopefully they'll have it read for Fall 2011.

I was/am a HUGE Buffy and Angel fan, and I find it funny that she is back on TV. I remember the post Buffy rumors circulating about how she wouldn't do a Buffy mini series to end the storyline if asked because she was basically bigger and better than TV and wanted to focus on larger movie based roles.

I can't say I care to watch this, it doesn't really seem to fit my genre. However, if they ever decide to do a mini series or made for TV Buffy that continues the show where the comic book picked up, I'll gladly watch. :D
