I am always trying to save money. I look back at my grandmother's generation and they saved everything, because they had to. We live in a disposable generation and don't try to get every use out of something that we can.
Here are a few ideas in the laundry area on how to save:
1. Re-use fabric softener sheets.
I have an empty box of dryer sheets on top of my dryer that I put my used dryer sheets into. I've discovered that two used sheets equals one new sheet, so I will put two used sheets into a load. Then when I'm folding my laundry, I see two sheets and know they've been used twice.
Something you can do with the twice-used dryer sheets (which I have done, but don't continue to do) is to use them as dusters. The used sheets wipe the dust and "polish" at the same time.
I also take one of the used dryer sheets and put it in the diaper pail. It helps keep the smell down.
2. Don't use dryer sheets
I personally like to use the dryer sheets, but if you want to cut them out completely, but still use the dryer, you can either do without, or use a couple of tennis balls. The balls will bash the softness into your laundry. :)
3. Hang clothes to dry.
Seems simple enough, right? I don't have room in my house or in my backyard to hang clothes (we have a townhouse). Every once in a while when there are only a few items in the washer that need drying, I will hang everything up in the bathroom.
One of my friends hangs all her clothes to dry. She puts them right on the hangers in the morning and the next morning they are ready to be put away in the closets.
4. Do multiple loads at once.
When you dry a few loads one right after the other, it saves a little money and time because the dryer is already heated up. However, I like to do one load a day and so this doesn't happen for me very often.
5. Do laundry at night.
Okay, this doesn't actually save YOU any money, but it does cut down on the energy being produced at the plants during the day, when most of our energy is being used. That's why it's green. :)
