It seems the era of technology is upon us.  This is news to no one, but while our lives have been inundated with technology in every aspect of our lives (communicative, entertainment, socialization, learning, etc. etc.), there have been no signs of progress slowing down.  In fact, the signs have been pointing in the opposite direction.

Recently, in California and other states, laws have been passed making it illegal to talk on the cell phone while driving without a hands-free device, and texting is restricted one-hundred percent. Until now.

The automotive research firm iSuppli Corp has announced the merger of cars and social networking through technology suppliers of voice-controlled devices to allow drivers to keep up with Twitter, Facebook and even their text messaging all while on the go on the roads.

Many luxury cars come standard equipped with Bluetooth capabilities, and many non-luxury makers have Bluetooth as an extra option.

OnStar, by General Motors  recently announced its plans to introduce an integration platform to bring Facebook into the ride.  The system is designed to take voice-directions to post status-updates, or read back the latest posts from the Newsfeed.  OnStar is also currently testing a voice-command feature that would allow drivers to send a receive text messages while driving.  The program won't be terribly sophisticated, however, with only a few preset replies available to choose from for both social networking and texting.

The app world has also taken notice of the need to expand the availability of social networking and communication past the doors of the user's car.  Like OnStar and other suppliers of voice-control solutions, app designers are recognizing even more the need to introduce safe social networking apps (amongst others) to drivers and non-drivers alike.

Trying to fight the influx of interactive technology (especially social media) would be like trying to stop a tsunami.  In this case, finding the safest and most effective means of safely navigating the roads while keeping up with tweets, updates and texts is the new priority, having said that....I'm scarred to think of what is the next invention that will keep us "plugged  in" at all times.
