Saying Goodbye to Maya Angelou
By Kim@LiaH on May 29, 2014
I never had the chance to meet Dr. Maya Angelou, but I feel as though I have known her most of my adult life. A dear friend of mine showed me a poem that Maya Angelou had written entitled, "Phenomenal Woman" and from that moment on, she became my mentor.
Maya came from a difficult childhood, and that is putting it politely. The hardships and abuse that she faced as a child still makes me weep to this day. I would like to believe that each of us women have a bit of Maya's spirit and fire and passion within us as well. Women are some of the strongest creatures that God has created, and it just enthralls me each day when I hear of the obstacles, difficulties, setbacks and injustices that women around the world have persevered against and overcome.
Her passing yesterday left me an emotional mess quite frankly. We expect those that we love and admire, even idolize to an extent, to always be with us. That somehow our elevation of them will keep them from death's door if we place them high enough upon the shelf.
Oh how I loved to see her celebrate her life, her reinvented life as she often spoke about. She was all about being positive, having positive experiences and not allowing negativity to take root in her life in the slightest seed of thought. It is how I have been reinventing my life these past several years as well. To find the good in everything, even a bad situation, and to be as positive and happy and filled with love and light as I possibly can each and every day.
I wish you a safe journey, Maya, into God's kingdom. I know many will be waiting to welcome you with open arms while those of us here on Earth are left bereft of the sunlight that was your smile.
