Saying "Oy Vey" at Least Once a Day
By OyVeyaDay on February 27, 2013
Oy Vey is a Yiddish phrase of exasperation or consternation. It comes from the phrase, “oy vey iz mir,” meaning “oh woe is me.”
As a mother of two boys under the age of four, I have at least one "oy vey" moment every single day. My boys are typical boys, so I imagine every member of the village helping to raise them has had many an “oy vey” moment when dealing with them - grandparents, aunts, friends, teachers, etc.
So, is this blog a place for me to whine and complain about motherhood? Some days, it may be just that. However, I named it “Oy Vey a Day” because, the "oy vey" moments, while no fun at the time, are often the moments I remember with the most fondness. They are the moments I laugh about the most when sharing with family and friends – especially other moms.
Memories of the moments that seem so exciting and happy at the time (first steps, first word, etc.) are, oddly, the ones that fade the quickest. For example, I cannot remember how old my kids were when they first started crawling, but there is no forgetting the time my oldest threw up all over Walmart or my youngest first stuck something up his nose.
They say “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Around here, we say “an 'oy vey' a day keeps the boredom at bay.”
I’m not sure if I am a glutton for punishment or just a “glass-is-half-empty” kind of girl. Either way, it is the "oy vey" moments that have defined my life – as a woman and a mother. They are the moments that make me scream the loudest, cry the hardest... and ultimately laugh the most. They are the moments that show me at both my weakest and my strongest. Sometimes, they just make me feel angry or inadequate, but more often than not, I think they make me better.
In this blog, I will share some of those moments and – well – anything else I feel like sharing. I also hope that family and friends will offer up some of their "oy vey" moments as guest bloggers.
Here’s to a lifetime of "oy vey" moments.
