Scottish Princess Merida is still "Brave" on DVD
By laurelarockefeller on November 18, 2012
This June, Disney delighted us with the theatrical release of "Brave," the story of a Scottish princess and a Scottish queen who cannot communicate with each other -- until Merida seeks to change her fate, evoking a powerful curse in the process.
This powerful film speaks to the heart of every woman's most challenging relationship: that between herself and her mother. It is a touching look at mothers and daughters, at what binds us together and tears us apart. Every woman can relate in some way to Merida and her mother; the themes and challenges are truly universal.
Adding to this timeless story is the resplendent beauty of the cinetography that captures Scotland like no film before, honoring Celtic cultures without judgement and without religious bias in any direction. The beauty of Celtic cultures (Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Breton) are on full display, particularly through the stone circle santuary that is seen repeated in the film.
Last, the film scoring is truly Oscar worthy (don't worry, I'm still hoping for an Oscar-nod for "The Hobbit's" Howard Shore). This is coming from someone whose first musical love is film and Broadway music! Absolutely worth a few song downloads.
In addition to the movie, the DVD includes a five minute bonus rendering of "the legend of Mordu" which provides a detailed account of the tale of Mordu -- and the curse Merida recklessly crashes into.
If you missed the theatrical release, you won't want to miss the DVD and Blue-Ray version! This is a special film for the entire family -- especially the women in your life!
