Scratch Wireless Cell Phones Win for Best Value: Free is Good
By Joanne Eglash on August 18, 2014
It's the time of year when parents stress about summer travel costs while preparing for back-to-school expenses. Soon-to-be first-year college students are already bargaining for extras, while junior and senior high school students plead for their first cell phone. If you're trying to find a cell phone solution that will please everyone in the family, it's time to meet the newest and best contender: Scratch Wireless.
The motto "free is good" usually applies to food samples at Costco. But Scratch Wireless has succeeded in taking the spirit of that phrase and using it for cell phones. (And no, this is not a parody: They actually mean it).
How it works: You purchase a Motorola phone from the company, which uses Wi-Fi as the primary connection. And since most of us make our calls at home, the dorm, in a Starbucks or at work, the odds are high that you'll be able to make that call for free.
Only if there's no Wi-Fi do you need the backup, which is the Sprint Nationwide Network. You can buy passes for those situations.
There's no need to stress about the cost of texting when it comes to your teens: It's free as well. There's a nifty slide-out keyboard that makes it simple.
The customer support system is quick and friendly, and online guides make it a breeze to set up and get going. From music to movies, downloading and viewing is fast and fun.
With lots of apps, a camera, and plenty of power, Scratch Wireless just might be the best invention since Fred Flintstone yelled "Yabadabbadoo!!"
In addition, the company just came out with more options, including the Coolpad Arise. There's a nice touchscreen display, and a camera with video capture. Users also have access to the Google Play store.
