First thought upon hearing Jessica Seinfeld is being sued for plagiarism: wow, you mean two authors think duping kids is a good idea? Admittedly, I’m not a fan of Seinfeld’s book “Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food.” I likely wouldn’t have opened the cookbook if not for the fact that Seinfeld is married to a very funny guy. Now, it turns out the joke may be on the Seinfelds because Missy Chase Lapine — author of “The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids’ Favorite Meals” — says Mrs. Seinfeld stole ideas from her book.

OK, so I took a peek inside Lapine’s book. Turns out, she may have a valid argument. Just like Jessica Seinfeld, she has her own clever ploys for hiding healthy foods, such as vegetables, in favorite meals such as mac and cheese and brownies. (Now are you beginning to see why I I’m not such a fan of Seinfeld’s book? I prefer the more direct approach with getting kids to eat healthy: finish your veggies or no desert!) It’s not new to see two cookbooks on the same topic (hello, we have how many low-fat or low-carb cookbooks out there, all preaching the same things), but the Seinfelds crossed the line by turning Jerry loose on the “Late Show with David Letterman.”

There, Jerry Seinfeld defended his wife and essentially called Lapine a “wacko.” He drew reference to the fact that folks with three-word names historically have been assassins, specifically Mark David Chapman and James Earl Ray. (Yes, he’s clearly forgetting the influential and peaceful folks with three-word names, like say Martin Luther King — whom Ray killed — or astrophysicist extraordinare Neil deGrasse Tyson.) Seinfeld’s attempt at laughs fell short with Lapine.

The lawsuit claims that any reasonable person watching the show would realize Seinfeld was describing Lapine as having “potentially violent or, at a minimum, hostile, tendencies, proclivities and activities.”

Sometimes, celebs would be better served by keeping their mouths shut. They may think they’re better than us common folk, but in court — especially the court of public opinion — its the common folk who get the final word.
