Self-care Ideas for Moms

 

If I had to describe motherhood in one word,  I'd say it is life-changing. For me, motherhood, hands down, was the singular event that turned my life upside-down. As overwhelming as it is gratifying, motherhood can consume you and make you forget what you were like before it arrived. As a new mom, it's important to exercise self-care to keep your identity (and your sanity). Below are some self-care tips I have found helpful in my experience as a new mom:

 

Daily

Pray and/or meditate. Pause and enjoy a few minutes of silence when you can remember to - when you wake up, before you go to sleep. Let positive thoughts fill you - think of the people you love and the things you are grateful for. Add some breathing exercises to further calm your mind and body.

Read and/or write. Especially if you are a stay-at-home mom and most of your conversations are in baby talk, it can be refreshing to read an adult book, blog, magazine or whatever you fancy. Writing is even better as it serves as a creative outlet. 

Eat and drink healthy. For a new mom, staying healthy brings a couple of added benefits: (1) you are setting yourself up to be a good role model for your child, and (2) you can keep up with your child as he grows - for now that may just mean combating the fatigue from sleepless nights. So stay hydrated, and eat your fruits and vegetables.

Spend 30 minutes outside. Take your child for a walk, or go for a jog by yourself. Fresh air and sunshine are guaranteed to lift your mood.

Hug someone you love. My 14-month old loves hugs, and also loves seeing other people hug (don't ask me why, but she has on a huge smile when she sees her Daddy and I hug).

Text or call a friend or a family member. Sometimes friends don't reach out to you because they think you are super busy with being a new mom. Start the conversation, and keep it going. Becoming a mom doesn't have to put a strain on existing relationships.
 

As often as needed

Treat yourself. Whether it's to a piece of chocolate, a glass of wine, or new lingerie. You deserve it.

Take a nap. Don't feel like you have to always be moving. If you need a nap, take one. A few minutes of much-needed rest is more important than washing the dishes or doing the laundry. This is the time to take advantage of your baby's multiple naps and take one yourself.

Create. Bake, craft, or decorate - direct your energy to a hobby or new activity for an hour. You will feel accomplished and more focused when you're done.

Exercise. There is no reason to hold on to the weight you've gained during your pregnancy. Although you've accepted the fact that your body has changed after pregnancy and birth, you can still do something about it. Enroll in a group exercise class, or just do some cardio in your bedroom. Break out a sweat and be energized.

Go out on a date. Whether it's with your husband or your best friend, enjoy some adult time without the kids. If you can't find a babysitter, you can stay home and have a nice home-cooked (or delivered) meal with some wine after your baby has gone to sleep.

Travel. With or without your baby, new experiences are always good for the soul.
