Serena and Maria: Two Major Upsets at the Australian Open
Yesterday, Tennis fans around the world were presented with a real treat! It was a match for the ages. The game was phenomenal and the shots were fantastic! Every single point was outstanding and well constructed. And they were not on Serena's racquet!
Former French Opne champion Ana Ivanovic came through like a whirlwind and swept the match away with a win. The game coming down in the end with the score: 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The game started with a surprise. Everyone was expecting Serena to walk away with this victory. Everyone expected her to come to the court and make short work of Ana. But, that didn't happen. Ana came out with a gameplan and she didn't let up on it. She played her game, she made her shots and missed very few. The first set went to Serena, but it wasn't won easily. She had to fight for that set. Usually, whenever Serena wins the first set, her opponent fades away in the second. No matter whether Serena is playing well are not. She usually pulls away with the win. But, Ana refused to let go. She dug her heels into it and she would not relent until she won the match. It has been replayed multiple times and people are still talking about it. It was such a shock to many people for many reason. First, becuase she was facing Serena. But, Ana has had a really tough time since winning the French Open in 2008. She went to number one and then she was getting so much attention. She was getting so many deals and opportunites, until she got overwhelmed. Unfortunately, her game suffered. But now, it seems that she's got her mojo back.
Ana moves on to the quarterfinals. Can she win the Championship and become a two time grand slam champ?
Well, just now, another major upset happened. Maria Sharapova lost to Dominika Cibulkova. Another surprise and expected win for Maria. Everyone just knew that Maria would win. Even Dominika had quite an impressive victory over another opponent, Suarez-Navarro, only losing one game. But, Maria is a four time grand slam winner and the highest paid female tennis player and one of the highest paid athletes period! So, Maria was the one that was supposed to get through. But yet again, it didn't happen. Maria , like Serena, was having trouble with injuries. She started well and people thought that it was going to go her way. But, even after taking a eight minute timeout, to get treatment, it still didn't secure her the match. Giving up over a foot in height, Dominika was a force! She was amazing! She made a great match and I really happy for both Ana and Dominika.
Up next, is a match that has been a year in the making. Victoria Azarenka vs. the young American Sloane Stephens. This match has been brewing since a sketchy and wrongful stunt pulled by Azarenka. Victoria had a "Time out" that resulted in major controversy. See, she was about to lose and she panicked. So, she took a time out and caught her breath and stuff like that. Then. she came back out and pulled off the win. Because it was such a sudden time out and she hadn't been complaining about anything, people instantly knew that it was a stunt. She knew what was about to happen and she couldn't lose with grace. So, everyone feel she cheated. And I can't really argue with that. But, now Sloane is about to take the court with Victoria. Sloane is smart, talented and pretty black teenager and she made it the match against Victoria by beating Serena last year. She may be an underdog, but judging by the previous upsets, I know that Victoria's getting nervous. She has to be! There is no way that she's not. Can a third upset happen? Can Sloane join the club of players of upsetting the favorites? We will see.
(I will blog about it tomorrow!)
