[Editor's Note: Such an interesting, pretty founded take on the way Sesame Street might need to sensitize itself to the times we live in. Still, Grover Forever. --Morgan]

With my tongue secured firmly in my blog-composing cheek, undeniably, there is a modicum of unintentional truth to the hypothesis. Like so many in our now-parental generation, with pop cultural blessing, I often find myself singing, “One of these things is not like the others; one of these things doesn't belong . . .

...We do love our Sesame Street; but as Big Bird sang so eloquently and reassuringly, Everyone Makes Mistakes, Oh Yes, They Do...

This satirical---by declaration---piece was motivated by recent commentary that Sesame Street (that I--against my maturing kids' will--still tune in to many mornings) has been a pawn of and has been pandering to liberal ideals. As seen last week here: http://www.newsy.com/videos/is-sesame-street-pushi... and here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/07/sesame-st... ( http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/07/sesame-st... ) and here: http://digg.com/news/politics/fox_news_panel_attac... ( http://digg.com/news/politics/fox_news_panel_attac... )

Thought this was a fun spin on some very in-the-news discussions...and from the titular angle, a condemning take on the correctly cited ridiculousness of folks who genuinely try to find such sinister content in innocuous vehicles.

Next, the expose that Kermit's "It's Not Easy Being Green" song is an anti-recycling call to action.... ;)

In all seriousness, think Sesame Street is WONDERFUL...and that it is one of the very last bastions of innocence in our highly polluted society.

With no thanks to the very corrupt and pro-racial profiling detergent market, I'm going offline now to sort my laundry into lights and darks.

if that is really the point you are trying to make...there are thousands of better and more relevant ways to do so...sesame street is just not one of them. that's like saying dora the explorer is not sensitive to the hispanic population...it's a ridiculous way to try to get a good point across.

This episode of Sesame Street was first aired in November 1970. Why are you worrying about Sesame Street doing racial profiling 40 years ago? Have you watched Sesame Street lately? Like any other show, it has adapted with the times. The producers of Sesame Street have always taken great care to make sure they are accepting of all people. These days they are teaching our children how to speak Spanish with their Muppet Rosita, because of the Hispanic influence in America.

Even if this wasn't from 1970, out of talking about circles, where do you get racial profiling? I would have understood if the story line had gone to Susan and Bob stating that they were different because of their color but since they didn't do that, I would LOVE to know where you got that idea from.

I think you are completely wrong for suggesting that Sesame Street "promulgates" racial profiling.

Our family ADORES Sesame Street!

Just thought we all--as parents and as people--could use the reminder that some grouping (a la Sesame Street)is all well and good---other "groupings?" Not so much! ;)

Any search of Sesame on the blog reveals a long-term love.

you know...i was just thinking the other day how much i love sesame street...because they seem to be the last PURE kids show on TV these days. they aren't trying to be PC...or push any sort of political issues...it's just kids learning...kids of all shapes and sizes. if you are looking and finding more then i beg to reason that your issue is not with sesame street but with something far deeper that has sent you to look for profiling in a place as innocent as sesame street. just leave it alone...you start trying to fix something that isn't broken than you just make more problems.

I don't think teaching kids to sort and group shapes and other inanimate objects is detrimental. That is a basic part of observation -- a required skill for learning.

But perhaps as parents we should start by teaching our children the difference between people, animals and things. And that just because something is different, it's not inferior.
