Valentine's Day is pretty much a non-starter for me this year. Not because I'm a V-day hater, because I am most assuredly not. And not because I'm single; I've had some very nice single Valentine's Days in the past, both on dates and hanging with friends. Oddly, the reason I'm feeling rather nonplussed about it is because I had an absolutely wonderful Valentine's Day last year with my then boyfriend. Literally, a Valentine's Day my dreams are made of. And so, this year, in the middle of this strange breakup recovery I'm in, it just seems incongruous to have this happy, potentially romantic holiday popping up. Like hello, what's that?

Luckily, some of the BlogHers in the Sex & Relationships BlogHer blogs are right on top of Valentine's Day. Carrielee offers 10 Ways to celebrate a green Valentine's Day:

The holiday is approaching so I thought I would write about Valentine's Day because to me, it seems so very commercialized. I decided I would come up with a list of ten ways for couples and single folks alike to celebrate a day that is supposed to be about loving one another, not about buying stuff for one another and eating out at some expensive restaurant. So, here is to a green valentine's day this year.

BMuff talks about Valentine's Day Traditions:

Our poor husbands. They really do mean well. They try so hard to please us all year long and when Valentines Day comes around they reach a state of panic, knowing they’re expected to present a gift that says ‘I love you. You are my everything’ without breaking the bank. Each year they try to outdo themselves, all the while wondering whatever happened to the gift he gave last year.

I don't personally identify with her perspective, but I'm down with her conclusion. Here's a hint: love, love, love!

And finally, a beautiful post from Lisen Stromberg, For Those of Us in Long-Term Relationships, Valentine's Is Really Happy-Sticking-It-Out Together Day:

But in many ways, this holiday is just another reminder that romantic love may have brought you together but it is the day-to-day journey that makes a marriage work. A few score years and it’s not about the high boil of romantic love, it’s about the low simmer of continuity and trust and commitment and loyalty and compassion and undying patience with a dash of good humor that is at the heart of true intimacy.

You know, for all the "bah humbug" that Valentine's Day brings, there already seems to be a lot of love in the air! How about you? Are you looking forward to Valentine's Day? Or looking away?
