Million Moms Fight Gay Wedding in Archie Comics

Another day, another misguided moral panic.

This time, it’s One Million Moms sending up flares about the fact that some Toys "R" Us stores are selling Archie Comics, featuring a gay wedding.

The concern of One Million Moms (the actual number of whose members I do not know) is that this comic, being displayed at the checkout counter, will incite all kinds of difficult questions from children “on topics that are too complicated for them to understand” (you know, unlike the topics that might come up when kids are exposed to toy weapons or camouflage-patterned toys and clothes, war not being a bit complicated).

OMM also points out that issues “of this nature are being introduced too early and too soon,” and that a “trip to the toy store turns into a premature discussion on sexual orientation.” This, the petition points out, is “completely uncalled for.”

I know you think I am going to say One Million Moms is wrong, but I didn’t call for a premature discussion on sexual orientation with my kids, did you? See? Uncalled for.

OMM is right, though. The toy store (any toy store) is just glutted with explicit messages about sexual orientation, aimed straight for our children.

Let’s consider for just a moment, how many toys revolve around themes of sexuality.

First, there is almost every single Disney tie-in product, from coloring books to costumes, screaming at even the youngest children, that boys and girls fall in love and get married and…live happily (nudge, nudge) ever after.

Then there are the wedding-themed Barbies and their cheaper, knock-off sisters. Wedding dresses, Ken dolls to serve as grooms and husbands, and dream houses with…bedrooms (ahem)…to go live in together abound in the doll section of the store.

If these weren't enough, there are racks of costumes for little girls, encouraging them dress up as princesses or brides themselves...bound for a honeymoon suite with a waterbed, no doubt...at scandalously young age.

How many teenie-bopper role models from (again) Disney are selling kids on the idea that a happy tween girl is one with a crush on a boy? How many pretty teen boys singing love songs are sold to those tween girls to outfit their underage sexual fantasies?

Frankly folks, it’s abundantly clear that there is a hardcore agenda afoot to recruit children into a heterosexual lifestyle. There is no way it could be natural—otherwise, why would we would to work this hard at shoving it down children’s throats?

So, in the spirit of One Million Mom-raderie, I have started my own petition to Toys "R" Us. It calls for the removal of all this inappropriate material from toy store shelves. After all, only a parent has the right to introduce such topics to her children.

You can read (and sign) my petition here:

CFO, Toys R Us: Stop Forcing Heterosexuality On Innocent Children

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

When I was a kid, my aunt used to bring her girlfriends to our house for family events.  This was long before there was the type of public awareness of gay issues that there is today, and my parents are hardly "modern."  My parents never made any distinction between her girlfriends and anyone else's significant others, and the only time it got uncomfortable was when she broke up with someone we really liked and proceeded to date a woman who seemed mean to my brother and me at the time.   Frankly, I was more concerned that my aunt would bring a new National Geographic science book as she was wont to do than who she was dating.

If someone a kid loves brings the issue crashing into the house doesn't do much, then what is the big deal about some comic book?

I don't see sexual orientation as being any more difficult to explain than the often dreaded "where do babies come from" question. Yet images of marriage and babies are not hidden from children. Sure, maybe you don't explain every little detail such as sperm and ovulation, but a simple explanation can be made. For example, I shared an image on facebook today with the simple explanation of "they are in love." Someday this question will be just like every other question that kids ask.

undeterrable In fact, my kids DO know where babies come from. They grow in women's uteruses. They have known this pretty much for as long as they were cognizant of the way a women with a visible pregnancy looks different from a women without one. No big deal.

I agree that there is a push for homosexuality aimed at children. I think at some point (not too young) children need to know about homosexuality. They may be struggling with it, and they need to learn tolerance. Thank you for this post. Barbara

Sorry but I AGREE with One Million Moms. And this is one Archie comic I would burn. And honestly I cannot stand the liberal opinions on blogher anymore. I'm outta here.

Mel4Him So the sexualization of children in general doesn't bother you? Just exposure to the idea that two men might get married? I am seriously curious.

Heather Clisby 21 pts

Mel4Him I don't think you should ever be sorry for your opinion. As a Section Editor here at BlogHer, I'd like to state for the record that ALL opinions are welcome here. How else are we supposed to learn from one another?

I love this. And you. Ugh, gay overtones in that fawning, huh?

I'd have to put horse blinders on my kids to stave off the too-young-for-them-content that is everywhere. Unfortunately, this parenting gig doesn't come with a guarantee that the talks will come when we feel emotionally and intellectually equipped to deal with them. Are these women turning off the radio? Are they removing the inserts from photo frames or keeping the kids out of department stores?

I sure as heck am not going to wait until my kids have completely formed idea of love before I try and nurture the idea that it should involve respect, fun and balance.

Sigh. Start at home, start at home, make good friends.

Great post.

Maybe they should be complaining also to the grocery stores for posting those magazines with Whitney Houston's open casket on the cover.

I agree with the writer 100% on this and frankly find One Million Moms to be offensive and absurd.

I own a collection of 223 Archie comics, bet your sweet Betty I'll be adding this one to my collection. And congrats to Archie comics for standing up for a topic. It's NOT about sex here. It's about love. And on that note, Archie comics have had a very curvy Veronica and Betty fighting over boys for over 30 years now! Love and attraction is NOTHING new to this comic!

It's frustrating whenever I see people try to put boundaries and limits on the love people have for each other. I hope the day comes soon that these moms and others look back and realize how ridiculous they were.

It's my personal opinion that each of us should marry whomever the hell we want to, regardless of gender. But that's beside the point. No one is forcing anyone to buy that comic. If those women don't want to see cartoons of gay people getting married, then they shouldn't buy the comic. If they don't want their children to be aware that gay people get married, then they should consider moving their families to a compound with highly effective media-blocking devices. Love conquers all, ladies. Gay peoples' right to marriage isn't going to go away, just because an extremely vocal (and misguided) minority think it should. Hopefully we'll all be able to look back and laugh at this argument, ten years from now.

Is there a petition I can sign to get OMM to change their name? As a Mom I feel like I should be one of them because of their name, but I disagree with everything the say. Sigh. Or can we just make them go away, some how? Please?

Those 'Million Moms' need to start taking care of their own kids and stop the terrorist type behind the scene attacks on businesses and organizations to get them to do what 'THEY' want, they dont speak for me and Im a mom. I have found several things they have sabotaged and they dont want people to know its them.

MM really just needs to stop. They look really ignorant in just about evereything they do and say. They give Mom's and women a bad name.

I love the Kevin Keller comic book and have bought every issue. I also bought the wedding issue of Life With Archie just to read the wedding, which by the way happens in a "possible future", not in the high school reality of Archie comics. It also didn't show any kiss or affection of that kind. I think that these million moms should go jump in a lake. I'm sick of their bigotry.

reading a comic isn't going to make your kid gay, and if your kid is gay you're just telling them it's not ok to want to fall in love. good parenting there. what does that teach other than hatred?
