Sexism and the Barbecue: Who Says Moms Can't Grill, Too?
By UncoolMomDotCom on June 10, 2010
Is anybody tired of seeing all the Father's Day ads featuring grills, "male" barbecue aprons, smiling men in goofy chef's hats, etc? And the fact that there's never any images of women and grills in Mother's Day ads? If I read my calendar correctly, Mother's Day falls near the beginning of grilling season, too...do most women really stay away from the grill? I admit, I once bought into the notion that "grilling is men's work" until I realized I'd like to have grilled food at my house more than just on the 4th of July or whenever men gather to drink beer...so I taught myself how to grill. Now many tasty marinades later, I've finally decided to write about the easy gas grilling method I learned from a book, in the hopes that more women will try grilling. (Check out the post at http://uncoolmom.com/2010/06/09/where-theres-a-will-theres-a-grill.aspx .) Maybe someone in the advertising world will get wise to the fact that some Moms might like to have one of those "Grill Daddy" cleaning tools as a Mother's Day gift instead of expensive perfume...I know I would. But since Mother's Day is almost a whole year away, and BBQ season is now in full swing, I'm probably going to have to just go buy one on my own...but I refuse to buy a goofy chef's hat!
