The latest presidential election cycle has only just begun and already we are engaged in some lively discussions about the sexist treatment of candidate Michele Bachmann. Was the Newsweek cover photo of the Congresswoman and the accompanying headline sexist? Was the "submissive wife" question out of line? Sexism may seem more out in front during a presidential campaign but it exists in politics all the time – and at the state and local level too.

I don't think the submissive wife question was out of line. This is a candidate who adheres to an extreme form of Christianity and she seeks to impose her practices on the rest of us. In that sense, turnabout is fair play.

What was sexist, and not just to her, was the stupid gallery on HuffPo that dealt with her shoes. Yes, she wears nylons with sandals, yes it looks dowdy, but no, you should have to be wearing stilletos to project power. It was a woman writer, no less.
