Sexual Assault AWARENESS Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and I want to do my bit by helping spread the word about some rape/sexual assault issues that everyone needs to know. For one thing, we have a fucking epidemic of guys not knowing they have raped someone.

Turns out if guys are asked if they have ever raped someone, they say “nope”, but if you phrase the question as “forced sex” then they sing like canaries. I shit you not. The data showing this was compiled from “two different studies. The first was a 2002 study done by David Lisak and Paul M. Miller titled "College Men: Repeat Rape and Multiple Offenders Among Undetected Rapists" [PDF]. The second was a 2009 study by Stephanie K. McWhorter et al. in which the results of the L&M study were duplicated on a larger scale, titled "Reports of Rape Reperpetration by Newly Enlisted Male Navy Personnel" [PDF].” So this isn’t a fluke.

These surveys found 120 rapists who didn’t think of themselves as “rapists”. A small fraction of them had raped as many as a dozen women each. None of these asshat has been arrested and charged with sexual assault.

If you want some “more depressing facts about rape, check out this list by Soraya Chemaly and this 2012 report from the CDC.”
