Should I Become a Yoga Instructor?

I am strongly considering getting my Yoga teacher certification. I absolutely LOVE going to Yoga classes every chance I get. I have a book about Yoga teachers and their experiences with it. Many of them were in college and universities prior to becoming Yoga teachers.

My back is severely compromised. I was in an accident (not my fault) in 2009. I now have six disc bulges/herniations and narrowed neuroforamens to boot. Yoga has been a way to help alleviate some of that severe chronic pain. And, the peace of mind I get in that hour of practice really helps my stress levels.

So, my question is: Should I take the 200-hour training class? It starts in January and goes for three months. Many of the classes are between four and eight hours a day. With a one-year-old at home, I wonder how I am going to find the time to do it without paying an arm and a leg for a babysitter. Hubby works 11-12 hours a day, so he really isn't an option for staying home with her that often.

I think it would transform my life if I did do this; plus, I could give people private lessons at their homes and make some extra money if a gym signs me on to teach some classes.

Thoughts?

I think your story could be an inspiration to others practicing yoga. If the timing is not right you could end up putting yourself through unnecessary physical and emotional stress. This is something that only you and those closet to you can know for sure. Best of luck in the decision making process.

Well, I think you should def go for it if you can afford it. Meaning that if for any reason you have to cancel or are not able to fully follow through and leave because of your back pain (and therfore forefit the payment) then go for it. Otherwise paying that money and not being able to finish (when you are strapped for cash) could be challenging. Then again, follow your excitement! Sara http://yogatrainingguide.com

Thank you for your insight and support! =) Defintely a lot to consider, as it is a big commitment, both financially and time-wise. =)

I think you should go for it. Yes, it will be an investment of time and money, but more importantly it will be an investment in yourself. It seems like yoga has been something really positive in your life, wouldn't it be great if you could share that with others as a teacher? Like you said, your sitter might be open to giving you a special rate for guaranteed business while you complete your training.

First of all, congratulations on rehabilitating your injuries through yoga! I have tossed about the idea of becoming an instructor myself at times, but the cost and time involved in training deterred me.

Maybe check around for different training programs that can be done at a schedule that fits you For example, does the studio or gym offer daycare while you're in those classes? Most instructors I've known were stay-at-home moms who started taking yoga to get themselves in better shape, and ended up wanting to teach, since they spent so much time and money on classes anyway! I think it would be fun, as long as you can find a way to make it balance with the rest of hyour life.

Hi there and thank you so much for your response and congrats on my rehabilitation! =) I am glad to hear that you know people who have done yoga training, too. Also, I think you should become an instructor as well! The cost is scaring me a little bit, too. The plus side is they offer a deep discount if I pay it all upfront ( we are talking $800 off). I am giving myself a few weeks to decide, as I have register soon.

If you love it and it's something you really want then you should go for it! I know child care is an issue - do you have family and friends that you can rely on?

Hi there! Thank you for your advice! =) I don't really have anyone that I can rely on here. I do have a sitter I use occasionally; maybe she will be nice enough to lower her rate if I use her 40 hours a week?

The Ruby Slipper It doesn't hurt to ask ;) Another option might be taking the classes part-time? Are they flexible on that?
