Should We Tell the Duchess the Truth about Pregnancy?

Are you one of the throngs of people rejoicing in the news that Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is pregnant? That’s right. Kate Middleton is preggers. Now she is one of the many people entering the secret club of pregnancy — one where no one tells you what is going to happen to your body until after it happens.

Becoming pregnant is supposed to be one of the most wonderful times of your life, right? For some, it may be. If you’re one of the lucky creatures who glow during pregnancy, you can stop reading now. But for the rest of us, pregnancy is really something to endure rather than enjoy. No one tells you this until after you’re already knocked up!

Things to “enjoy” while you’re pregnant?

  • Heartburn
  • Stretch marks
  • Unending nausea/throwing up
  • Sciatic nerve pain
  • Poor sleep
  • Aching feet
  • Forgetfulness (“mommy brain”)
  • Short-term diabetes
  • Constipation
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Yeast infections
  • Excessive gas
  • Mood swings
  • Hypertension
  • Water retention
  • Nose bleeds

Still think being pregnant is like taking a ride on a magical Disney ride? The fact is your body goes into freak-out mode and becomes an alien force one must contend with. The only thing I enjoyed about being pregnancy was the midnight hiccup and kicking sessions my sons had. In the quiet and darkness of the night, when everything is supposed to be still and serene, it was an intimate moment that made me laugh with delight.

It’s a myth being pregnant is wonderful. What is wonderful? The baby you get after all of the side effects of being pregnancy.
