Should you look for a new job or start your business?

Many people have different reasons or motivations for starting their own business. You may desire more money, more freedom or just want to be in better control of your finances.

Regardless of your reason, if you're still working a full time job, there may come a time when you need to decide if you should stay in your current position until you can get your business up and running or if you should change jobs or careers.

When it comes down to staying at the job you hate or moving on, you have to assess your current and future goals as well as your tolerance level.

For me, I don’t necessarily hate my job, but it’s way too stressful and dreadful to go to everyday. It's not that I mind working for someone but I’m at the point where I feel my work may suffer because I'm growing to dislike what I do very much. However, since finding out I was expecting my first baby, I’ve decided to suck it up and stick it out until he’s born.

If you can tolerate you current job, I would advise staying for the following reasons:

Time:

You can use the time you would be searching for a job to focus on your side business. When looking for a new job, some people recommend spending hours each week applying for a job. Imagine all that you can get done in those hours each week if you focused on your side business.

Job history:

Depending on the type of business you want to start and if you're going to need a loan to finance it, it's better to stay at your current job so you can include the job history. Creditors not only review your credit report and income but how long you’ve been at your job.

Distraction:

Looking for a new job is not only time consuming but' its mentally distracting. Your time and attention is split. The focus you could be directing toward your business, you are now directing toward a job search or how much you hate your job.

But if you feel you can’t stand being at your current job one more day, let alone however long it's going to take to find another job, then it's best to move on.

Have you decided to stay at your current job and work on your side business or devote all your time to a new job?
