For about six weeks I've been going to bed between 10 and 11 pm and waking up between 4 and 5am. There were a few nights when I was awake and at my desk by 3:45am. I'm not doing this on purpose. I just can't seem to sleep any longer than that. I've tried staying up til midnight or later but I just keep waking up before 5am. This has been driving me insane. I'm pretty sure it contributed to the weird stomach bug I had last week, too.
I'm hoping my sleep problems have started to resolve themselves. For the last couple of nights, I've been able to sleep - once until 5:30am when I took Michelle to work, but I was able to climb back into bed and sleep til 8am. Sleep. Is. Good. Really. Good.
Did you see the study last week that indicates lack of sleep can cause psychological disturbances? That's sort of new. People with psychiatric disturbances often have sleep problems, but it is generally thought that it is the psychiatric condition causing the sleep problem. It might actually be the other way around. Which is interesting, right? But, not necessarily news to us. There are quite a few parents who can tell you that sleeplessness makes them crazy.
Like Karen, at Strollerderby.
I would explain all this in more scientific terms (amygdala! norepinephrine! medial prefrontal cortex!) but I didn't sleep well last night, sorry, and I'm feeling kind of sad...hey, dammit, I said I wasn't going to explain more...lalalalala, let's all sing now! Besides, you know if you're not sleeping. And, well, hello, you know it makes you kind of crazy. That person who left the baby (in his carrier) next to the car, then got in the car, buckled the seat belt, and then turned around to say something to the baby except there was no baby (the baby being still outside the car), that was you, wasn't it? Or, er, no, that was me. Whatever.
College students around the world are glad to have an excuse.
It's nice to think we have a medical excuse for being irritable during midterms.
It isn't just kids and studying keeping people awake, it's street drama, too.
My day started at 1:40 AM. Why was I awake at 1:40 AM? Because three stupid people decided to perform a little street theatre outside my house. They were performing selections from a show I like to call “Kill Me Now”.
Have I told y'all that I'm fascinated by the Get rid of things blog? Well I am. I like the premise. I'm not sure the tips for getting rid of insomnia will actually work, but anything is worth a try when you can't sleep.
I did a blog search to find things people do when they can't fall asleep. It looks like "you" do the same stuff that I do. Mindless quizzes and memes, redesign your blog and of course, you blog, don't you?

my top hints for sleeplessness
Here are my top tips for sleeplessness. It doesn't matter if you do this on the beginning end of sleep or when it is interrupted.
1. If you are running a theme park in your head -- i.e. worrying about the same thing over and over -- then face the thing. (Easy for me to say.)
2. Try getting the room quite cool. Take a hot shower. Walk into the cool room. Snuggle under covers. Snuggling is sleep inducing in a cold room.
3. Put your body to restfulness one part at a time...i am letting my toes relax..then relax them. I am letting the balls of my feet relax ..then relax them ..etc. This will either relax you or bore you to sleep. Either way you win.
4. Try a hot toddy of milk, almond extract, a big dollop of honey . Heat this up and sprinkle with nutmeg. Even people who hate warm milk, love this. Toss down a couple of calcium pills at the same time. Calcium is sleep inducing.
5. Before you fall asleep tell your body when you want it to awaken. (I know this sounds odd, but it often works.)

Do you drink Diet Pop?
As someone who has been plagued with hormonal insomnia ( I started waking up at 3:00 am sharp the moment I got pregnant both times) and pre-menopause was years of being up at 3:00-- I found that cutting out aspartame made a huge difference.
I love my diet coke but haven't had one in two years. Do I still wake up in the middel of the night...many times. The difference is now I can fall back to sleep, if I choose.
