Slut-Shaming Snooki

**This post is fairly graphic**

Anyone who reads gossip columns (guilty) knows by now that Snooki of Jersey Shore has been having some incontinence issues, which she attributes to a urinary tract infection. After peeing on the dance floor of a club last episode, she admitted to Andy Cohen that, "I'm such a dirty little rat.. when I'm drunk, it's just, anything goes." The audience cheered and laughed. She then hypothesized that she got her UTI "from, like, butt sex or something."

What, you may ask, does anal sex have to do with a UTI? As the commenters on Gawker explained, the practice of "double dipping," or anal penetration followed by vaginal penetration, introduces harmful bacteria into a woman's vagina, putting her at risk of infection (this had never occured to me before...you learn something new every day!).

Full disclosure: The idea of butt sex makes me uncomfortable. Not only does it sound painful, but I, like many people, see the butt as dirty and gross. BUT-- and this is a big but-- I recognize that many women as well as men enjoy anal penetration, and there's nothing wrong with that. My visceral reaction to Snooki's admission is no basis on which to judge her, or anyone's, sexual habits. In ninth grade, there was a girl a few grades above me who was said to "take it up the ass." After hearing this from multiple people, I began to wonder what the big deal was. Honestly, who cares?

Unsurprisingly, most of the comments on Gawker were about Snooki's "grossness" and "whoreishness." "I wouldn't touch that skank with a 30 foot pole," said one. "Well I've only got a 6 inch pole but I wouldn't touch her either," said another. This one's even better: "I can't decide which putrid sewer I'd least rather enter. Snooki's vag or Snooki's ass."

In a more recent post, Gawker's Brian Moylan gives a full recap of the UTI episode. He defines the "shore shower" as, "Spraying one's body and private areas with perfume to cover up a certain odor, usually that of leaky bodily fluids. It is essentially a 'whore's bath.'" I'm not defending Snooki's bathing habits, but I sense a lot of borderline-sexism in this statement. Perhaps I am reading too much into it.

Moylan then goes on to explain Snooki's method of self-medication: Drinking a shitload of tequila.

An empathetic person would comment on this story something like, "Wow, I feel kind of sorry for Snooki. She's clearly a major alcoholic who needs help," not,

"Given the traffic it seems I'm not surprised Snooki's vagina shares many traits with a bus stop bathroom-drafty, smells like pee, and always makes you feel vaguely uncomfortable after you've used it as a last resort."

High five, bro! What a dirty slut! Nice one!

There are lots of promiscuous girls who manage to sleep around and never get an STD or UTI. There are a lot of non-promiscuous girls who do get STDs and UTIs. Talkng about Snooki's vagina as if it were a dirty bathroom reinforces the idea that "good girls" are always disease-free and dirty whores like Snooki deserve what they get for being so slutty and gross. There are lots of things to criticize about Snooki, but slut-shaming her is not funny or acceptable. It's sexist, it's cheap, and it's getting old.
