Smart Cookies, Money Groups and the Last Taboo

I recently read The Smart Cookies Guide to Making More Dough, and I was thrilled to read this article in today's New York Times about the Cookies and money groups.

The author is pro-money group, but what really got me to thinking after I read this article was the mention of money as the last taboo.  My girl friends will give me the play-by-play of their sex lives, candidly discuss which anti-depressants they've tried, but they suddenly become tongue tied whenever the subject of money comes up.  I know what they like to do and whom they like to do it with, but how much they make?  Forget it.

Why is it?  How come we can talk in such intimate detail about everything but money? Any ideas out there?
