[Editor's note: This week something truly amazing happened in Yemen. In a righteous display of outrage against the regime, and its brutality against female protestors, Yemeni women burned their veils. That's right. Burned them. No wonder the incident drew international attention. As Adrianne M.P. at Technorati points out, Yemen has a terrible history when it comes to women's rights.--Mona]

She writes:

The country's women's issues came to light for the first time in 2008, when a 10-year-old girl named Nujood Ali succeeded in obtaining her right to divorce due to constant rape by her husband of his mid-30s and abuse by her in-laws. Ali and her lawyer, Shada Nasser, received acclaim by prominent women around the world and were named "Women of the Year" by Glamour Magazine

Would you be brave enough to challenge your government like these women? Do you think our own political system hurts women? How?

As I sit her in my cosy home in liberal western country (Australia) I know only two things:

1/ how lucky I am to live where I do

2/ I have no idea if I would have the guts to do what these women have done, or the fortitude to live like they have.

Oh, and I do know one more thing: I should really go back to supporting Amnesty International. . .

Awesome post and amazing picture! It is hard to say if I would be this brave because it is not my experience. I don't know the limits of my own threshold because I have been raised in America. While I have suffered tragedy and discrimination, I have not had to suffer the kind of human rights violations these women have endured their entire lives. It is easy for me to say, "Hell Yeah" I'd burn my veil!" But what makes this movement truly extraordinary is that these women are quite literally risking their lives to try to break a system of rape and violence and abuse that has existed their entire lives. To overcome the state of fear alone is impressive and then to take this risk is nothing short of revolutionary, inspiring, and bad-ass!
