[Editor's Note: I've read a lot of posts about the Occupy movement (and about the Tea Party movement, for that matter) and this is one of the most interesting. Is Ayn Rand's Objectivism alive and well in the United States? What do you think? - Denise]

In the seat of the Financial District in Chicago, at the T-intersection where LaSalle Street jams up against Jackson Street, a protest is growing. Hemmed in by the Chicago Board of Trade, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and the Bank of America building, the Financial District has become a Windy City location marker for the upper one percent. While I was there, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Sr. made an appearance. So did Ayn Rand.

Thanks, Jane. The incongruity has always stood out to me. I have several friends who are fundamental Christians and devout Ayn Rand followers at the same time, something that isn't truly possible. You can see right through them . . .

Your post makes an excellent point. I'm mystified by how The Tea Party activists, most of whom consider themselves fundamentalist Christians, have embraced Ayn Rand without having the slightest knowledge of her Objectivist philosophy other than the fact it supports lassez-faire capitalism. Ayn Rand was a devout Atheist (is that an oxymoron?) and they are mostly religious-right Christians. Ayn Rand was rigid in her support of science/facts/math/logic and the Rick Perry Tea Party clan are a bunch of Flat Earth evolution haters who think dinosaurs and people roamed the earth together like on the Flintstones. How these two very VERY different philosophies decided to become BFF's is beyond my imagination.

Great article!
