I was a bit of a latecomer to Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I started reading it only after the final book, The Last Olympian, was published. A benefit of coming to the series late was that I was able to read all five books in a month. When I turned the last page of the Percy Jackson series I was a bit sad. I was going to miss Percy and all those troublesome gods. I was excited when I found out Riordan was returning to the same world in the Heroes of Olympus series. Son of Neptune is the second book and a must read for anyone who loves Percy Jackson. I'd already read the book when I found Alexa's review, which calls is a "brilliant second book in the series," but if I hadn't I'd have been running out to the store to get it immediately. Welcome back Percy, we missed ya!

son of neptune rick riordanWith The Son of Neptune, I was already aware that Percy would be our main protagonist once again, and that he would, of course, remember nothing of his old life and friends from Camp Half Blood. I've always admired Percy's character (since the Percy Jackson days), and it was kind of fun watching him grow a little more as he encounters new friends, foes and even locations in this new life Riordan writes for him.

I loved getting to know the two new characters though, Hazel and Frank. Both characters are flawed, riddled with their own insecurities, secrets and longings. But they both also possess amazing (and quite stunning) abilities that come into play quite often during the course of their quest.
